Liverpool's Pursuit of Bradley Barcola: Transfer Tensions Rise
Liverpool’s pursuit of Bradley Barcola has reached the familiar, tense stage of a major transfer: everyone wants the deal, but the numbers refuse to fall into line.
Inside Anfield, the Paris Saint-Germain winger has emerged as the preferred heir to Mohamed Salah. The club have pushed hard in recent weeks, encouraged by clear signals from the player’s camp. Barcola is understood to be open to the move, personal terms are not viewed as an obstacle, and Liverpool see him as their top attacking target.
The problem lies in Paris.
A chasm over the fee
Sky Sports reporters Amar Mehta and Vinny O’Connor revealed on Friday evening that, while Liverpool and PSG have held preliminary talks, there remains a “significant gap” between the clubs’ valuations of Barcola. PSG’s stance on the fee is described as making the deal “difficult to complete”.
Figures around the French champions’ demands have varied wildly in recent days, with numbers between €145m and €170m (£125m-£145m) being mentioned in reports. Whatever the exact figure, it is far beyond what Liverpool are currently prepared to pay.
That financial gulf matters even more given the context. With Salah gone and several alternative options already off the market, Liverpool are under pressure to land a marquee wide forward. Barcola fits the profile: young, dynamic, and keen on the Premier League move. PSG, fully aware of that leverage, are in no rush to fold.
Confusion over ‘deal in principle’
Into that tension dropped a claim from Liverpool-focused outlet DaveOCKOP that an agreement in principle had already been reached between the clubs. Their report suggested a fee of around €128m (£110m), with add-ons said to be more realistic than earlier proposals.
They also echoed what has been consistently reported elsewhere: Barcola’s preference is to join Liverpool, and he is not expected to sign a new deal with the European champions.
But the notion that the clubs have already shaken hands on a fee has not been backed up by heavyweight outlets. Sky’s line is clear: talks, yes; agreement, no. The gap in valuation remains.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano underlined that stance, stating that negotiations are ongoing between Liverpool and PSG but that “nothing is agreed or even at final stages as of now”. He reiterated that Barcola is Liverpool’s top target and that the player wants the move, something he has been reporting since May, but stressed there has been “no breakthrough in talks yet”.
Liverpool’s next move
The situation leaves Liverpool at a crossroads. The player is on board. The need in the squad is obvious. The club’s recruitment team have put their energy into this chase, with other candidates dropping away.
To get Barcola, though, Liverpool will have to go beyond their current comfort zone. PSG have set their terms. The Premier League side must now decide how far they are willing to stretch for the man they see as Salah’s successor.
