Kimmich Set to Remain Captain as Klopp Era Begins

Germany may be licking their wounds after a limp Round of 32 exit at the World Cup, but one pillar of continuity looks set to remain: Joshua Kimmich as captain.

Sporting director Rudi Völler, speaking at the International Coaches’ Congress in Mainz, made it clear he expects the Bayern Munich man to keep the armband under new head coach Jürgen Klopp.

“I assume so,” Völler said, according to DPA, when asked if Kimmich would stay on as skipper.

He did not dress it up. For Völler, the evidence is already there.

“Jo Kimmich has proven in many international matches that he is a leader and a great captain. I cannot imagine there will be any major change in that position.”

The message was firm, but not a decree. Völler underlined that the final call belongs to Klopp, who steps into the job with his own ideas and an urgent rebuild on his hands after another early tournament exit.

Still, the direction of travel seems obvious to those inside the camp.

“We have all followed what he has said. You didn’t really get the impression that anything else was planned,” Völler added, hinting that Klopp’s early signals have aligned with the federation’s view of Kimmich’s role.

Kimmich only took over the captaincy recently, inheriting it from Ilkay Gündogan after Euro 2024. The armband arrived at a turbulent moment for the national team, with form stuttering and expectations still sky-high.

Now comes the hard part: turning that symbolic promotion into the backbone of a new era under Klopp, with Kimmich expected to be the face – and voice – of a Germany side under pressure to rediscover itself.
