Kane Insists England Squad is United Ahead of World Cup Semi-Final

Harry Kane has drawn a firm line under talk of tension in England’s camp, insisting the squad is united and locked in on their World Cup semi-final with Argentina.

The captain moved quickly to shut down suggestions of a rift between players and manager Thomas Tuchel after Jude Bellingham appeared to bristle at the German’s criticism of England’s display in their gruelling 2-1 extra-time win over Norway in Miami.

Kane: ‘Complete togetherness’

England’s victory came in brutal conditions, the Miami heat sapping legs and minds as Bellingham dragged his side through with two goals. Tuchel, typically uncompromising, questioned the performance afterwards, and Bellingham responded by pointing out that “he doesn’t know what it’s like to play in those kind of conditions”.

That was enough to light the fuse on the familiar tournament narrative: England in turmoil. Kane was having none of it.

Speaking to BBC Sport, the striker defended his teammate and turned his fire on the noise around the squad.

“When you are playing a game like that and to be asked a question five minutes after the final whistle, and he didn’t really know what the manager has said, what do you want Jude to say?” Kane said.

“We had just been through a battle. It was really tough out there.

“It is easy to try and create this division – it seems like an English mentality, an English thing to do at these major tournaments.

“But it is the complete opposite. The group is where we are because of our togetherness – not just the players, the coach and the staff.

“Things sometimes get made out to be more than they are.”

In a few sharp lines, Kane both defended Bellingham’s reaction in the heat of the moment and reinforced the message that the squad is aligned behind Tuchel.

Respect for Tuchel’s edge

Kane did not shy away from Tuchel’s bluntness. He framed it instead as a strength, a key part of what places the German among the elite.

“We understand it. Players on the pitch know more than anyone when you are playing well, when you are not playing well, that is part and parcel of football,” he said.

“We understand what the boss meant, the boss has been so complimentary of the group.

“He said the mentality of the group, which is sometimes the hardest part, has been at the highest, highest level and we have been for some time now.”

Tuchel’s intensity, his habit of speaking straight from the heart, has clearly made an impact.

“He wears his heart on his sleeve and people appreciate that. When he talks, it is never scripted. That is what makes him who he is.

“When it just comes naturally, you believe in that, you believe in what he is saying, you believe in his approach.

“He is one of the best managers in the world for a reason. We understand it. Over the past two years we have got to know him and know what makes him happy.”

No dilution, no distancing. Kane aligned himself squarely with his manager while shielding Bellingham from the suggestion of dissent.

England now move from the furnace of Miami to the white heat of a World Cup semi-final against Argentina. The questions about harmony will keep coming. The captain has made his position clear: this team intends to face them, and everything else, together.
