Juventus Sign Jhon Lucumi as New Defensive Pillar
Juventus have their new defensive pillar – and they paid decisively to get him.
The club have wrapped up a deal for Bologna centre-back Jhon Lucumi, striking an agreement worth an initial €18 million plus a further €2 million in potential bonuses. The Colombian has signed a four-year contract in Turin, earning €3 million net per season, a clear sign that he is being brought in as a cornerstone, not a squad filler.
Lucumi’s choice was just as emphatic. Faced with several other offers, he pushed for Juventus and Juventus only, making the Bianconeri his priority as soon as talks became serious.
From Cali to Turin
Lucumi’s journey has been steady rather than spectacular, but each step has hardened him.
He broke through at Deportivo Cali at just 17, then crossed the Atlantic to Genk in 2018. In Belgium he quietly built a reputation as one of the league’s standout defenders, the kind of centre-back bigger clubs circle for months before making their move.
Juventus underlined that profile in their official announcement, hailing him as a player “at the peak of his powers, ready to make an immediate contribution to the team ahead of the 2026/27 season.” The welcome was simple and direct: “Welcome to Juventus, Jhon!”
Bologna’s defensive rock
If Belgium put him on the radar, Bologna turned him into a Serie A mainstay.
Arriving in the summer of 2022, Lucumi grew into an automatic pick at the heart of the Rossoblu defence. Across four seasons he amassed 152 appearances in all competitions, an ever-present figure in a side that climbed into the Champions League and punched well above its traditional weight.
He even left his mark on Europe’s biggest stage. Lucumi scored one of his two Bologna goals in front of the home crowd at Stadio Renato Dall’Ara on a Champions League night, a small but symbolic moment in the club’s recent resurgence.
Straight into Allegri’s plans
Now comes the step he has been working towards.
With the transfer completed, Lucumi will immediately slot into tactical sessions with his new Juventus team-mates, tasked with anchoring a reshaped backline. There will be no gentle introduction: the Bianconeri open their 2026-27 Serie A campaign away to Frosinone on Sunday, August 23.
That trip is widely expected to be Lucumi’s competitive debut in black and white. A new stadium, a new shirt, the same responsibility: marshal the defence, set the tone, and show why Juventus were so sure he was the man to build around.
