Juventus Pursues Joshua Zirkzee Amid Manchester United Exit
Joshua Zirkzee’s Manchester United chapter already feels like it’s moving toward its final pages. The Dutch forward, once paraded as a long-term attacking solution, is now at the centre of a summer scramble, with clubs across Europe sensing an opportunity.
According to The Athletic, United are open to selling the striker, and Zirkzee is actively considering his options after a bruising spell in English football. Two unnamed Premier League rivals have made discreet enquiries, testing the water on a deal. Ajax also asked the question, sounding out United’s stance as they reshaped their attack.
Then the door closed.
The Dutch club’s business – the arrivals of Marcos Leonardo and Tolu Arokodare – has effectively ended their pursuit. With their forward line already reinforced, Ajax are not expected to push for an agreement, leaving the field clearer for others.
And that is where Juventus have stepped in with purpose.
The Turin side are driving hardest for his signature, working on a loan arrangement designed to bring Zirkzee back to Serie A. The move suits all parties on paper: a lower-risk structure for Juve, financial flexibility for United, and, crucially, a league the player knows and has already conquered once. Reports indicate Zirkzee has given the green light to the idea of returning to Italy, where his stock was at its highest.
It was that 2023-24 season with Bologna that persuaded United to part with £36.5 million in 2024. Zirkzee arrived at Old Trafford with the glow of a breakout campaign behind him – a technically elegant forward, comfortable between the lines, expected to add a different dimension to the club’s attack.
The Premier League, though, has been unforgiving.
Across the last two seasons, he has managed just 19 starts in 56 league appearances, a stop-start existence that has never really allowed rhythm or confidence to build. Five Premier League goals is a thin return for a player of his talent and price tag, and a stark contrast to the authority he once showed in Italy.
Yet the ability has not vanished. It resurfaced in pre-season, when Zirkzee produced an excellent goal in a strong display against Rosenborg, a reminder of the timing, touch and composure that first drew Europe’s attention. It was the kind of finish that makes coaches hesitate before signing off on a sale, the kind of moment that keeps sporting directors on the phone a little longer.
United, though, appear ready to move on. The market has noticed. Juventus are pushing, rivals in England are circling, and the player himself is listening.
For Zirkzee, still only in the early years of his career, the decision now is simple in theory but brutal in reality: fight to rewrite the story at Old Trafford, or head back to a league where he already knows how to thrive.
