Enter Mateu Alemany. According to SPORT, Atletico’s director of football is working to arm Diego Simeone with a stronger, deeper group, and at the top of that list sits one name: Cristian Romero.
Romero has been a long-term target for Simeone. The Tottenham centre-back fits the Atleti profile perfectly – aggressive, front-foot, unrelenting. His signing would be a statement in defensive terms, the kind of move that instantly hardens a back line.
But this chase is not just about blocks and tackles.

A defender Álvarez would follow

In an interview back in December 2025, Álvarez was asked specifically about Atletico’s interest in Romero. His response left little room for interpretation.
“Yes, absolutely. Obviously, I would’ve liked it. Cuti is one of the best defenders in the world. I spend a lot of time with him in the national team and I think he’s incredible, an absolute competitor and extremely strong defensively.
“I had a few conversations with him and, for various reasons, it didn’t happen, but hopefully one day we’ll be able to play together.”
At the time, those comments sounded like a polite nod to a hypothetical future. Today, they read like a roadmap for Atletico’s present.
Inside the club, the belief is simple: land Romero, and you don’t just tighten Simeone’s defence. You send a direct message to Álvarez that this is a project built with his wishes in mind, that the dressing room is being shaped around the kind of players he wants alongside him.
Barcelona wait for the crack in the door
Barcelona, though, are not walking away. They remain in steady contact with Álvarez’s camp, testing every possible angle to unlock a deal Flick has pushed high up his priority list.
The Catalan hierarchy know the landscape. Time, for now, leans towards Atletico. Every day that passes without a breakthrough for Barça is another day in which Atleti can reinforce, another day closer to potentially presenting Álvarez with exactly the teammate he once said he “would’ve liked” to join.
