Joshua Zirkzee's Manchester United Future: Loan Move to Juventus Looms
Joshua Zirkzee’s Manchester United future is edging towards a decisive break, and the queue for his signature is forming quickly.
According to The Athletic, the Dutch forward has become one of this summer’s more intriguing transfer subplots, with United open to a sale and several clubs sensing an opportunity. After a bruising spell in English football, Zirkzee is weighing up his next move carefully.
Two unnamed Premier League sides have already tested the water, checking in on his situation and United’s demands. Ajax also made contact to understand the club’s stance, but their interest has cooled. The Dutch giants have already moved to strengthen their attack with Marcos Leonardo and Tolu Arokodare, and that flurry of business has effectively shut the door on a push for Zirkzee.
The real heat is coming from Italy.
Juventus are driving the chase, working on a loan deal and, crucially, have the player’s approval for a return to Serie A. Zirkzee knows that league well, and it knows him. His move to Old Trafford in 2024, for £36.5 million from Bologna, came off the back of a standout 2023–24 campaign in Italy that convinced United they were buying a forward ready to explode on a bigger stage.
That explosion never came.
Technically smooth, intelligent in tight spaces and comfortable linking play, Zirkzee has found the Premier League unforgiving. Physical, relentless, impatient. Across the last two seasons he has managed just 19 starts in 56 league appearances, with only five Premier League goals to show for his efforts. Those numbers tell the story of a player used more as an option than a focal point, a talent flickering on the fringes rather than shaping matches.
Yet the ability that drew United to him has not disappeared. In pre-season, he reminded everyone of that. Against Rosenborg, Zirkzee produced an excellent goal in a strong display, a glimpse of the composure and technique that once made him one of Serie A’s most exciting young forwards. It was the kind of moment that keeps scouts interested and sporting directors patient.
United, though, look ready to move in a different direction. With the club open to his departure and Juventus pushing hard, the path is clear: a loan to Turin, a return to a league that suited him, and a chance to rebuild a reputation that stalled in England.
If that deal gets done, the question will not be whether Zirkzee can play at this level. It will be why the Premier League never saw the version of him that Italy might be about to welcome back.
