Joshua Zirkzee's Future at Manchester United: Juventus Loan Deal Looms

Joshua Zirkzee’s Manchester United career is drifting, and Juventus are circling.

The Dutch forward, once signed amid fanfare from Bayern Munich in 2024 under Erik ten Hag, has never truly convinced the Old Trafford crowd. Now, with his future beyond this summer’s transfer window uncertain, talks with Juve are said to be at an advanced stage over a loan deal that includes a £30million option to buy.

For United, the numbers tell a blunt story. Zirkzee, now 25, has produced just five goals in 56 Premier League appearances. Across two different managers in Ruben Amorim and Michael Carrick, he has failed to nail down a regular starting role, slipping further away from the core of the project in M16 rather than towards it.

Yet Zirkzee himself has not given up on the idea of making it at United. He is understood to want a place in Carrick’s plans and is reportedly content to stay, believing that European football at Old Trafford in the 2026/27 season could finally give him the platform and minutes he craves. In January, when he pushed to leave, the club blocked any exit.

The stance now looks softer.

United are described as open to a departure this summer and willing to accept a loan with a £30m option, despite paying around £36.5m for him two years ago. Inside the club, there is a recognition that the proposed fee reflects his current value, shaped by inconsistency and a failure to turn flashes of promise into a sustained run.

Juventus, hunting for a new focal point in attack, have moved into pole position. The Turin giants had initially targeted Kolo Muani from Paris Saint-Germain after his unsuccessful loan spell at Tottenham Hotspur last season, but those negotiations stalled over the fee. With that deal stuck, Juve have quickly switched their attention to Zirkzee.

They are not alone. Roma have held a long-standing interest in the forward and remain in the frame, yet Juventus are now viewed as the most serious and fastest movers. That urgency may prove decisive.

For Zirkzee, Serie A is familiar ground and a tempting escape route. He knows the league and its rhythms, having spent a season on loan at Parma and two more at Bologna. Italian football, with its emphasis on structure, spacing and combination play, is thought to suit his style far better than the relentless, transitional chaos of the Premier League. Those close to the player believe he sees Serie A as a better tactical fit.

Reports suggest his representatives have responded positively to Juventus’ approach. The prospect is clear: a fresh start in a league where he has already shown he can function, at a club that needs a striker and appears ready to trust him.

All this comes in spite of a bright recent moment in a United shirt. Zirkzee impressed in a 5-0 pre-season win over Rosenborg last Friday, offering a reminder of the talent that persuaded United to invest heavily in him in the first place. Sharp movement, neat link-up play, a goal threat – it was all there, if only for one summer outing.

Yet pre-season cameos do not alter the reality of the current pecking order. Benjamin Sesko and Mateus Cunha sit ahead of him in Carrick’s plans, and the potential return of Marcus Rashford threatens to push him even further down the list of options. For a 25-year-old international, squad-player scraps are no longer enough.

So the crossroads is clear. Stay and fight for a role that keeps receding into the distance, or jump back to a league where his qualities are better understood and his pathway more open.

Juventus are ready to offer that route. The next move belongs to Zirkzee – and to a United hierarchy finally willing to cut their losses on a gamble that never quite came off.
