Joao Cancelo Returns to Al Hilal Training Amid Barcelona Transfer Saga
For most of the summer, Barcelona treated Joao Cancelo’s return as a matter of time rather than a matter of doubt. A deal with Al Hilal felt inevitable, the kind of transfer that usually gets wrapped up once the noise dies down and the lawyers finish the small print.
It still hasn’t happened.
The Portuguese full-back, who lit up the second half of last season on loan at Barça, is back in pre-season training with Al Hilal. The Saudi club confirmed his return to work on their official channels, a clear reminder that, for all the optimism in Catalonia, Cancelo remains their player.
And so the saga stalls.
Professional in limbo
Al Hilal have not built their plans around Cancelo. With only one year left on his contract, they are open to letting him leave. That has never been the problem. The issue lies in Barcelona’s ability to reach terms that satisfy the Saudi champions, who are under no pressure to accept a cut-price offer simply because the player wants Camp Nou.
Cancelo, 32, has made his preference obvious. He wants Barcelona. He continues to prioritise a move back to the club where he displaced Alejandro Balde and finished the season as the starting left-back, showcasing the versatility that made him such a key piece in the run-in.
Yet preference does not equal permission. Until an agreement is signed, he reports for duty.
His return to Al Hilal training should not be read as a change of heart, nor as a collapse of the deal. It is a straightforward act of professionalism: he is contracted to the Saudi club, and he is behaving like it. For now, he trains, he prepares, he waits.
Barcelona’s quiet confidence
Inside Barcelona, the belief in this operation has not vanished. The club still think they can get Cancelo over the line before the window closes. His stance gives them a certain leverage: Al Hilal know he would rather leave, and that knowledge often shapes negotiations, even when no one admits it publicly.
But leverage has limits. Al Hilal are not compelled to accept conditions that do not suit them, and that reality has slowed the process more than Hansi Flick would have liked. The new Barça coach wanted clarity and continuity in the full-back positions; instead, he has a familiar uncertainty.
The attraction of Cancelo has never been in doubt. He offers tactical freedom that few defenders can match: comfortable on either flank, able to step into midfield in possession, and capable of unlocking deep, compact defences with his passing and movement. Barcelona know exactly what they would be buying because they have already seen it up close.
In a squad still taking shape under Flick, Cancelo looks like a low-risk, high-impact signing.
Pressure on Balde, pressure on Barça
His arrival would also sharpen the competition for Alejandro Balde. The young left-back faces a pivotal season after losing his place to Cancelo in the final stretch of the last campaign. A renewed duel on the flanks could either accelerate Balde’s development or expose how far he still has to go.
For the club, the clock is not yet a crisis. There is time left in the window. But each day Cancelo trains in Saudi Arabia is another day Flick works without one of the key profiles he had pencilled into his system.
Barcelona still want him. Cancelo still wants them. Al Hilal still hold the contract.
Something has to give before the deadline decides it for them.
