Jhon Lucumí Chooses Juventus Amid Transfer Talks

The calendar is edging toward late August, the mercato clock is getting louder, and Juventus still have work to do.

A sixth-place finish has left no room for illusion in Turin. This summer was always going to be about upgrades, and at the heart of that plan sits one name that refuses to go away: Jhon Lucumí.

Lucumí picks his side

The Bologna center back has been a constant presence in Juve’s defensive shortlist all summer, and now one key piece of the puzzle is in place.

According to reports from Tuttosport, Juventus and Lucumí have reached an agreement on personal terms. The Colombian is ready to sign a five-year contract worth €2.5 million per season, with a further €1 million available in bonuses. For a player on Bologna wages, that represents a serious rise and a clear signal of intent from both sides.

It also underlines something else: Lucumí has made his choice.

Multiple outlets report that the defender is holding out specifically for Juventus, turning down richer offers to keep the Allianz Stadium at the center of his plans. In a market where players usually follow the biggest paycheck, Lucumí is swimming against the tide.

Turning down Turkey, waiting on Turin

The list of clubs he has reportedly rebuffed is not insignificant. Galatasaray came calling. Besiktas did too, now coached by his former Bologna manager Vincenzo Italiano. Those are not minor suitors, especially with the kind of financial packages Turkish clubs can put on the table.

He has also been linked in recent weeks with Inter and several Premier League sides, but that noise has faded. The chase has thinned. One destination remains.

Because right now, Lucumí wants Juventus — and only Juventus.

Bologna hold their line

There is, of course, another party in this story.

Bologna are under no obligation to rush. Lucumí’s €28 million buyout clause expired in mid-July, and with that safety valve gone, the club have taken back control of the fee. The current asking price is reportedly around €25 million, a figure they appear determined to defend.

For Juventus, that is not a trivial number, especially in a summer where every outgoing and incoming must be carefully balanced.

Juventus need to move pieces

This is where the deal stalls.

Juve’s interest is real, Lucumí’s desire is clear, but the Bianconeri are likely in a position where they must sell before they can buy another defender. The names in the frame are no secret: Federico Gatti, Lloyd Kelly, Juan Cabal, or another member of the defensive unit could be sacrificed to make room.

Until one of those dominoes falls, Lucumí is stuck in limbo, his future mapped out in principle but not yet on paper.

So the situation sits on a knife edge. He wants Juventus. Juventus want him. Bologna want their money.
