Jamal Musiala Faces Pressure to Perform This Season
Lothar Matthäus has drawn a clear line in the sand for Jamal Musiala. The time for sympathy is over. The time for dominance, he insists, has to start now.
The Bayern legend used his latest Sky Sport column to fire a pointed warning at the 23-year-old, whose last two years have been shaped by one brutal moment: the fractured fibula and dislocated ankle he suffered against PSG at the FIFA Club World Cup in July 2025. That injury ripped him out of Bayern’s rhythm for six months. The comeback was slow, cautious, and understandable.
But not anymore.
No more excuses
Matthäus did not dress it up. Reflecting on Musiala’s situation, the 65-year-old wrote: “So what’s next for Jamal Musiala? Eventually, the serious injury he suffered over a year ago will heal. He needs to finally put it behind him. That’s crucial now, otherwise, he’ll likely spend a lot of time off the bench due to the stiff competition.”
That is the crux of it. Bayern are no longer waiting for Musiala to catch up. Under Vincent Kompany, the champions have built an attacking structure that works without him being the undisputed focal point. The chemistry across the front line is growing, and with it, the pressure on the playmaker who once looked like the future of the club’s number 10 role.
Matthäus made it clear that the battle for that central creative position is already fierce. Harry Kane and Serge Gnabry, in particular, have forged a partnership that looks instinctive, sharp, and reliable. Their “excellent chemistry in their rotations,” as Matthäus described it, has become a reference point for Kompany’s attack.
A shrinking margin for error
The warning is not just about Kane and Gnabry. Bayern have layered their squad with other creative threats who can step into the spaces Musiala once owned almost by default.
Michael Olise brings guile and unpredictability between the lines. Youngster Lennart Karl offers another option in the number 10 pocket, a fresh, hungry alternative who understands Kompany’s demands. Both, Matthäus stressed, are capable of playing centrally and keeping the attack fluid.
“Serge Gnabry and Harry Kane have shown excellent chemistry in their rotations. We also know that Olise and Karl can play in the number 10 role. Kompany will find the right mix again,” he wrote. The implication is blunt: Musiala is no longer protected by his reputation or his potential. He has to outplay teammates who are already delivering.
Matthäus did acknowledge the positives. Musiala showed flickers of his old self at the end of last season in a Bayern shirt, with further encouraging moments on the World Cup stage. The talent is not in question. The consistency is. “Musiala showed promise at the end of the season at Bayern, and there were also promising signs at the World Cup. But there are no more excuses,” Matthäus concluded.
Pre-season as a crossroads
The next few weeks could define Musiala’s role for the entire 2026-27 campaign. After undergoing a minor procedure in July 2026 to remove a metal stabilisation plate from his leg, he now enters pre-season with a clean slate physically and a clear objective mentally: rebuild full match fitness, then make himself undroppable.
There is no gentle easing-in period on the horizon. Kompany’s Bayern are preparing for a season that demands both domestic control and European ruthlessness. They go into the new Bundesliga campaign as defending champions, but last season’s Champions League exit in the semi-finals to back-to-back winners PSG still stings.
Kompany must find the “ideal attacking formula” to go one step further in Europe without losing their edge at home. That means difficult decisions, rotating big names, and trusting only those who deliver when the pace quickens and the margins narrow.
Musiala wants to be central to that plan. Matthäus’ message is that wanting is no longer enough.
