Inter Milan Targets Curtis Jones from Liverpool for Transfer
Inter Milan are turning up the heat in their pursuit of Curtis Jones, with the Serie A champions working to strike a deal for the Liverpool midfielder before the transfer window closes, according to sources speaking to Football Insider.
The 25-year-old is understood to be open to the move. After years on the fringes at Anfield, he wants to step out of the “squad player” bracket and into a leading role – something that has consistently eluded him on Merseyside.
A career stuck in the middle
On paper, Jones has been heavily involved. He featured in 34 Premier League games for Liverpool in the 2025-26 season. Look closer, though, and the story shifts: only 18 of those appearances were starts as Andoni Iraola’s side laboured to a fifth-place finish.
That lack of status has had consequences. Thomas Tuchel left Jones out of England’s squad for the 2026 World Cup, a brutal marker of where he currently sits in the national-team pecking order.
For a player who broke through in 2018-19 and gradually carved out a place in the first-team squad, it feels like a crossroads. He has played at least 34 games in all competitions in four of the last six seasons, collecting medals along the way, including a Premier League title. He has been present for Liverpool’s successes. Just rarely central to them.
Numbers that don’t move the needle
The data underlines why he has struggled to nail down an undisputed starting role.
As of 5 August, Fotmob recorded Jones at 0.05 goals per game, 0.13 xG, 1.07 shots, 0.09 assists and 0.98 chances created. Out of possession, he averaged 4.76 duels won with a 50.7 per cent success rate, 1.87 tackles and 0.84 interceptions.
They are solid numbers, but not standout ones. He does a bit of everything without clearly dominating in one phase of play.
At Liverpool, that’s a problem. Dominik Szoboszlai offers a clear attacking edge. Ryan Gravenberch brings stronger defensive presence and physicality. Jones sits somewhere between them, tidy and reliable, but not the first name on the teamsheet in either role.
Little wonder, then, that a potential sale would not shock many inside Anfield. It would, in fact, fit a narrative that has been quietly building for some time.
Liverpool’s first big exit of the summer?
If Inter and Liverpool can agree a fee, Jones is poised to become the club’s first major outgoing of the summer. So far, Iraola has not seen any significant departures for a transfer fee, even as the squad begins to take shape for the new campaign.
For Liverpool, cashing in on a homegrown player who has never fully cemented a starting spot could help reshape the midfield and free up funds. For Jones, it offers something more precious: a chance to be a central figure at a club that wants to build around him rather than rotate him.
Inter, for their part, see an experienced, Champions League-tested midfielder entering his prime, available at a moment when he is clearly ready to leave his comfort zone.
The interest is mutual. The clock is ticking.
Gakpo interest grows as Liverpool attack evolves
Jones is not the only Liverpool player attracting admiring glances.
Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly made Cody Gakpo their top attacking target this summer. The Dutch forward, who has often operated across the front line for Liverpool, could find his role squeezed after the arrival of Victor Munoz, with Bradley Barcola also being strongly linked with a move to Anfield.
Sensing an opportunity, Spurs are lining up a move in the hope that Gakpo can sharpen their frontline and give them a different dimension in the final third.
Liverpool, though, have decisions to make. Letting Jones leave would already signal a willingness to evolve and to be ruthless with players who sit on the edge of the XI. Sanctioning a sale for Gakpo in the same window would be another bold step in a summer that is quietly edging towards a significant reshaping of Iraola’s squad.
The window is open, the offers are circling, and Liverpool’s next moves will say plenty about who they believe should carry the club into the next era.
