India's Depleted Squad Faces Jamaica in Unity Cup Semi-Final
The last time India’s men’s football team played on British soil, the year was 2002. A different era, a different generation. They return now, 24 years later, lighter in numbers, heavier in complications, and walking straight into a physical, high-tempo examination under the London lights.
All of it unfolds at The Valley, home of Charlton Athletic FC, where the Unity Cup 2026 kicks off this week. India, ranked 136th in the world, face Jamaica (71st) in the second semi-final in the early hours of Thursday, with kick-off at 12:00 AM IST on May 28.
The stage is modest. The questions around this Indian side are not.
A tournament with sharp edges
The Unity Cup is a compact, unforgiving four-team event. No group stage, no easing into rhythm. Nigeria (ranked 26th), Zimbabwe (130th), Jamaica and India. Two semi-finals, a final, and a third-place play-off. Win and you stay alive. Lose and you’re fighting for scraps.
Nigeria meet Zimbabwe first, at 12:00 AM IST on May 27. A day later, Jamaica and India step in. The winners move to the final on May 30; the losers are pushed into the third-place play-off on the same day.
For India, it’s not just about results. It’s about how a patched-up squad survives a tournament that offers little room for error.
Seven withdrawals and a midfield stripped bare
The story of India’s build-up is less about tactics and more about absences.
Mohun Bagan Super Giant withdrew seven players from the national camp midway through preparations, ripping out a large chunk of Khalid Jamil’s plans. Lalengmawia Ralte, Sahal Abdul Samad, Anirudh Thapa, Vishal Kaith, Abhishek Singh Tekcham, Manvir Singh and Liston Colaco – gone from the London roster before a ball was kicked.
Add Ashique Kuruniyan’s injury, and the damage is clearest in midfield. Jamil is left with just three specialist options in the centre: Jeakson Singh Thounaojam, Noufal PN and Ricky Shabong. Of those, Noufal and Ricky are still waiting for their first senior international cap.
So India arrive at The Valley with an 18-member squad, not just thin but untested in key areas. Every selection call in the middle of the park becomes a gamble. Every injury scare becomes a potential crisis.
Experience at the back, new energy up front
If the midfield is a headache, the spine at the back offers at least some calm.
Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, the most seasoned name in this squad, anchors the goalkeeping unit alongside Hrithik Tiwari and Albino Gomes. In front of him stands Sandesh Jhingan, the defensive leader once again tasked with holding together a back line that includes Rahul Bheke, Nikhil Poojary, Roshan Singh Naorem, Akash Mishra, Bijoy Varghese and Pramveer.
The real intrigue lies higher up the pitch.
Ryan Williams and Lallianzuala Chhangte are expected to spearhead the attack, bringing pace and directness to a side that will likely spend long spells without the ball against Jamaica. Edmund Lalrindika arrives with a spring in his step after an ISL-winning campaign with East Bengal and will want that club form to bleed into the international arena.
Alongside them, Rahim Ali and Farukh Choudhary add depth and running power, but in a tournament this sharp, chances will be few. Efficiency in front of goal could define India’s entire trip.
Jamaica, Nigeria, Zimbabwe – and a reality check
On paper, India are the lowest-ranked side in the field. Nigeria carry the heft of African pedigree, Jamaica bring athleticism and a higher ranking, and Zimbabwe hover just above India in the standings.
For Jamil’s side, this is not a gentle overseas tour. It is a stress test.
The semi-final against Jamaica will likely demand discipline without the ball, clever use of transitions and a huge shift from that makeshift midfield. Jeakson’s ability to shield the defence, Noufal’s and Ricky’s composure in their first senior minutes – these are not subplots, they are central themes.
How to watch from India
For fans back home, the Unity Cup 2026 will be streamed live on FanCode. There will be no television broadcast in India, so the early-morning ritual shifts to phones, laptops and tablets as the clock strikes midnight.
