Getafe Secures Orel Mangala on Loan from Lyon
Getafe have moved decisively in the final stretch of the window, securing Belgium international Orel Mangala on loan from Lyon for the season.
The deal, announced by both clubs, offers a fresh start for a midfielder whose last 18 months have been defined more by medical bulletins than by performances. Mangala, 28, arrived at Lyon from Nottingham Forest in 2024 on a four-year contract meant to anchor their midfield long term. Instead, his time in France quickly became tangled in misfortune.
A serious ACL injury during a loan spell at Everton last season stalled his momentum and left Lyon with a high-earning player unable to influence their campaign. As the French club now wrestle with the financial and sporting fallout of missing a step in Europe, Mangala has become part of a wider clear-out.
Lyon’s 3rd qualifying round first-leg defeat to Sparta Prague in the Champions League has sharpened the need to trim the squad and reduce the wage bill. Mangala, on what are described as massive wages, is one of several players the club are prepared to move on, with Getafe set to cover part of his salary.
For the La Liga side, it is a calculated gamble. If Mangala recaptures the form that took him from the Bundesliga to the Premier League and then to one of France’s biggest clubs, they gain a powerful, press-resistant midfielder with international pedigree at a fraction of the cost. If not, the risk is limited to a single season.
The structure is simple: a season-long loan, no permanent transfer announced, with Mangala still tied to Lyon until 2028. His future in France, though, looks increasingly uncertain. French outlet L’Equipe has already indicated that his departure is likely to be the first of several as Lyon work to balance their books and reshape a bloated squad.
Getafe, meanwhile, add a player with something to prove and a career to relaunch. Lyon shed part of a heavy salary and open the door for more exits. The question now is whether this move becomes a turning point for Mangala, or just another stop on a career still waiting for a sustained run at the highest level.
