Florentino Perez Reveals Ambitious Transfer Plans for Real Madrid
Florentino Perez has never been shy of a headline, but this time he lit the fuse himself.
Sitting in a television studio on the programme Horizonte, with the presidential race around Real Madrid beginning to crackle, the long-serving president laid out a transfer plan that pointed away from the usual names and towards something far more dramatic.
Not Haaland. Not Kane. Something bigger, he insisted.
“It’s not Erling Haaland or Harry Kane”
With rival Enrique Riquelme building his campaign around the promise of bringing Erling Haaland to the Santiago Bernabeu, Perez chose to confront the speculation head-on.
"It's not Erling Haaland or Harry Kane," he said, cutting through weeks of rumours in a single line.
Instead, he teased a different kind of coup. A mystery signing, valued at €150 million, with an announcement expected next week. A deal, he claimed, already close to completion and set to become the most expensive in Real Madrid’s history.
"On Tuesday, I'm going to make a significant offer to a top Champions League team for a great player," Perez revealed. "It would be the largest transfer fee Real Madrid has ever paid. At least 150 million."
No name. No hint of position. Just the promise of a statement.
Mourinho, Konate, Dumfries – and more to come
Perez did not stop at one headline. He went further, openly listing three planned arrivals as he sketched out a summer of upheaval.
"I can tell you about three signings: [Jose] Mourinho, [Ibrahima] Konate, and [Denzel] Dumfries. But there will be more."
In a single breath, he pointed to a new coach, a defensive pillar and a dynamic full-back, while still leaving room for the blockbuster deal to come. It was a transfer blueprint delivered with the certainty of a man who knows his power base is being challenged and intends to remind everyone exactly who is in charge.
Elections, enemies and a “conspiracy”
Behind the transfer noise lies a deeper tension at the Bernabeu. The presidential race has stirred old grievances, and Perez made it clear he believes forces are working against him and against the club as he sees it.
"The criticism doesn't hurt me. What hurts me is that these people want to influence Real Madrid; Riquelme's father was one of them," he said, turning a sporting debate into a battle over the club’s soul.
He spoke of a "conspiracy in the media to destabilize the club" and framed his decision to call elections as a pre-emptive strike.
"I wanted to nip it in the bud. That's why I decided to call elections. What a coincidence that those who wanted to destabilize Real Madrid are the same ones who come from a sinister period in the club's history. They brought people into the assemblies who weren't from Real Madrid, they snuck in. And that's why I came back in 2009. Now, those are their children. I'm furious."
The language was raw, personal, and pointed. This was not the measured tone of a president coasting to re-election. It was the voice of a man who feels the past is trying to claw its way back into the present.
Riquelme’s Haaland promise under fire
Riquelme has tried to harness the modern campaign weapon: the marquee name. His promise to deliver Haaland has dominated his message, a simple, seductive pledge in an era where superstar signings can swing opinion.
Perez moved to dismantle that promise in public.
"Everyone has denied it: his father, his agent, and the club. It's a bluff. It's a candidacy full of bluffs."
That word – bluff – hung in the air. Perez wasn’t just questioning a rival’s transfer claim; he was attacking the credibility of the entire campaign.
"And that's why I'm here, to defend Real Madrid. We are a united club."
A €150m question
So the picture is set. On one side, an incumbent president promising Mourinho, Konate, Dumfries and a record-breaking €150 million signing from a top Champions League club. On the other, a challenger selling the dream of Haaland and a new direction.
Perez has drawn the battle lines: tradition against what he calls destabilization, certainty against bluff, his version of Real Madrid against those he links to a "sinister period" in the club’s history.
Now everything rests on that looming announcement. When the name behind that €150 million fee finally emerges, it will not just reshape Madrid’s squad. It may decide who holds the keys to the Bernabeu for years to come.
