FIFA Confirms Gianni Infantino Will Seek Re-Election Amid Rising Opposition

Gianni Infantino, the dominant figure in global football, remains committed to seeking another term as FIFA president. Despite growing legal pressure and internal disputes, FIFA has confirmed that Infantino will run for re-election in 2027. The 56-year-old Swiss-Italian official shows no intention of stepping down, even with mounting resistance from key football bodies.

FIFA Stands Behind Incumbent President

The governing body reaffirmed Infantino’s candidacy for a third term amid widespread calls for change. Since the collapse of the contentious FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) initiative, opposition has intensified. This plan aimed to sell minority stakes in World Cup commercial and event rights to private investors but was met with fierce backlash.

A FIFA spokesperson told The Athletic: "The FIFA President announced in April that he will stand for re-election in 2027. Of course, nothing has changed. Mr Infantino will be standing for re-election."

FIFA Forward Enterprise Sparks Major Conflict

The FFE plan triggered a significant divide within football’s leadership. UEFA responded by threatening a boycott of FIFA competitions, with its members unanimously rejecting the proposal. Meanwhile, South America’s CONMEBOL emphasized that financial choices must always respect football’s core values.

Faced with united opposition from football’s largest confederations, Infantino abandoned the FFE scheme. He admitted that the project caused serious divisions among stakeholders.

"Having listened carefully to all the views, it has become clear that the project has created divisions of a nature that, regardless of the level of support, are no longer in the interest of the objective set out in the first place," Infantino said.

He added that his goal now is to reunite parties involved in football to promote growth, especially in countries needing more support.

Ongoing Controversies Shadow Infantino’s Leadership

Beyond commercial disputes, Infantino’s presidency has faced numerous controversies. Ticket prices soared during the recent World Cup, causing discontent among fans. Questions were raised about his influence over disciplinary decisions, notably when a one-match ban for USMNT forward Folarin Balogun was overturned after reports surfaced of a phone call between Infantino and former U.S. President Donald Trump.
