Breel Embolo has re-emerged on Serie A’s radar, and this time the battle for his signature looks set to stretch across borders.
According to calciomercato.com, Milan have moved first, opening talks with the Switzerland striker’s camp to test the waters over a possible deal. No bids, no formal negotiations with Rennes yet – just the kind of exploratory phone calls that often light the fuse on a summer saga.
Rennes, for their part, are in a strong position. Embolo is under contract until 2029 and the Ligue 1 side value him at around €15m. That figure, in today’s market, is hardly prohibitive for a club of Milan’s size, but it still demands a clear plan and room in the squad.
What makes this more than just another name on a long list is Embolo’s stance. A standout at the recent World Cup, the forward has already indicated he would be open to a return to Italy. For clubs looking to refresh their attacking options with a proven international profile, that matters.
Milan and Napoli wait for the first domino
There is a catch. Two, in fact.
Both Milan and Napoli need to clear space in attack before they can move decisively. At Milan, everything still orbits around Rafael Leão. The club have yet to receive an offer they consider acceptable for the Portuguese forward and remain firm on their €50m valuation. Until that changes, any move for Embolo sits in the “idea” column rather than the “operation” one.
Napoli are in a similar holding pattern. Massimiliano Allegri has Embolo on his list as he looks to reshape his frontline, but the club are focused on finding a new destination for Romelu Lukaku. Sporting director Giovanni Manna is working on that front, and only once Lukaku’s future is resolved can Napoli fully enter the race.
Bournemouth, by contrast, lurk with fewer complications. The Premier League appeals to Embolo, and the English side are monitoring the situation, ready to pounce if the Italian giants hesitate. For a player long admired in Serie A – Juventus and Roma have tracked him in the past – the possibility of England adds another layer to an already crowded chase.
An alternative path at San Siro
Milan do have another lever to pull.
Santiago Giménez is among those who could depart, and his exit would change the picture. Should the Mexican striker leave, the Rossoneri could decide to move for Embolo regardless of what happens with Leão. That scenario would allow Milan to act faster, without waiting for a blockbuster sale to unlock funds and squad space.
For now, everything remains in the early stages. No formal offers, no club-to-club talks, just interest, valuations and quiet conversations with agents. But the framework is there: a World Cup performer open to Italy, a €15m price tag, and three clubs with different needs converging on the same target.
Once the first major attacking move lands – a Leão bid, a Lukaku solution, a Giménez departure – the market will accelerate. And when those dominoes finally start to fall, Embolo’s next destination may be decided in a hurry.
