The 1998 World Cup winner described Mbappe's public chase for individual honors as childish and lacking humility, especially given his leadership role.

The relationship between football legends and today's stars is often tense, but Dugarry took his critique to a new level. Following Mbappe's recent statements about aiming for his first Golden Ball, Dugarry condemned the player for prioritizing personal glory over team success.
Known for his blunt opinions, Dugarry argued that openly campaigning for such an award is beneath a player of Mbappe’s caliber and undermines his duties as captain of Les Bleus.
“To publicly ask for an individual award like that, I find it CHILDISH and PATHETIC. There’s nothing great about asking for it, especially as captain of your national team,”

The criticism came after Mbappe admitted he feels well-placed to finally claim the prestigious prize. Speaking about his chances, the 27-year-old said that playing for Real Madrid, widely regarded as the best club globally, naturally puts him in contention for the Ballon d'Or.
“I think when you play for Real Madrid, the best club in the world, people associate you with this award,” Mbappe stated. “Maybe it’s a good year for this but people can vote according to what they think.”

Despite falling short of major trophies during his last season at Paris Saint-Germain, Mbappe remains one of the most prolific forwards, scoring 42 goals in 44 appearances for Real Madrid last term. Yet, some critics highlight his failure to win the Champions League while at PSG as a blemish on his record.
Dugarry sees Mbappe’s focus on personal statistics rather than collective achievements as part of a bigger issue in modern football, where individual stars sometimes overshadow the team’s identity.
He added, “Football is becoming more and more individualistic, and far too often it makes me sick. Instead of talking about yourself and individual awards, you should be talking about the team, about sharing success and about the trophies you didn’t win but wanted to win together.”
