Steve McManaman Calls on Dominik Szoboszlai to Lead Liverpool After Key Departures
Following a summer of major changes at Anfield, Dominik Szoboszlai has been named one of Liverpool's vice-captains under new manager Andoni Iraola. The Hungarian midfielder joins long-serving figures Alisson Becker and Joe Gomez as deputies to captain Virgil van Dijk, taking on an important role in the squad after the departures of Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson.
McManaman Urges Szoboszlai to Take Charge
Ex-Liverpool winger Steve McManaman believes Szoboszlai must now emerge as a key leader both on and off the field. Speaking to Seven, McManaman stressed that when influential players leave, others need to rise to the challenge.
"Dominik Szoboszlai is another one who is establishing himself in this team now. We've lost some big players over the last few years; big characters in the side, so you need somebody to either come in or step up. That's what superstars do."
He sees Szoboszlai as a potential successor to Van Dijk's leadership, especially with his role in controlling Liverpool’s midfield rhythm.
Guiding Liverpool’s Youth
With a young squad under Iraola, McManaman feels the new leadership trio must maintain high standards. He pointed out the significant influence Salah and Robertson once had in the dressing room and urged Szoboszlai, Van Dijk, and Alisson to help accelerate the growth of younger players during this rebuilding period.
"He's got a really important role to play this season because we've lost some huge characters. They need to play a big part in bringing the younger lads through, and quite quickly."
Looking Ahead: Champions League and Beyond
Regarding the upcoming season, McManaman thinks a top-four finish and solid runs in domestic cups would mark a good start for Iraola’s tenure. He noted that while the squad might lack depth for a full title assault, second-year players are expected to make noticeable progress.
Liverpool will depend heavily on Szoboszlai’s leadership as Iraola blends new signings and emerging talents into his tactical plans.
