Derby County's Young Guns Triumph Over Mansfield in Pre-Season Clash

Derby County’s fringe players and academy prospects made their case in style, shaking off Mansfield Town with a sharp 3-1 win built on a bright second-half surge.

With the bulk of the senior squad earmarked for duty at Burton Albion tomorrow, this was a night for understudies. They didn’t waste it.

Dajaune Brown struck first, finishing the kind of move coaches replay in team meetings. Lars-Jorgen Salvesen peeled wide, measured his cross and whipped in a teasing ball that begged to be finished. Brown obliged, timing his run and converting to give Derby an early lead.

Mansfield, though, were never here to make up the numbers. There was edge in their play, and soon enough, quality too.

Released down the right, Michael Smith – once on Derby’s radar – went to work. He slowed the defender, shifted the ball onto his left and bent a superb effort beyond the reach of Josh Vickers, the Derby goalkeeper at full stretch but beaten by the precision of the strike.

That seemed to ignite the visitors. David McGoldrick, a familiar menace to Derby fans, almost turned the game on its head before the break. His low effort looked destined for the corner until Vickers flung himself across goal to claw it away, a terrific save that kept the scores level and underlined his sharpness.

First Half

The first half had flickered. The second half crackled.

Smith nearly punished Derby again shortly after the restart, thundering a header against the bar from a corner as the Stags pressed for a lead that would have felt deserved on pressure alone.

That scare jolted Derby back into life. From midfield, Owen Eames surged forward, driving through the heart of the pitch and slipping in Salvesen. The Norwegian forward connected cleanly but fired straight at Lewis, a let-off for Mansfield and a reminder that Derby still needed a clinical edge.

The game opened up. McGoldrick tried to seize it, stepping onto a strike from outside the box, but Vickers read it early and plunged low to his right to push it away. Each save from the Derby keeper bought his young teammates a little more time to find their rhythm.

Second Half

Then the tide turned.

Charlie Smith picked up the ball around 20 yards out, the kind of range that tempts ambition. He didn’t hesitate. One touch to set, one to strike, and the ball skimmed into the bottom corner, Lewis beaten as it kissed the turf and arrowed away from him. It was a clean, confident hit, and it swung the night back Derby’s way.

From there, you felt another goal coming. The energy shifted, the passes grew braver, and Mansfield suddenly found themselves chasing shadows.

The pressure finally told when Corey Blackett-Taylor drove at the defence, committing bodies and prising open space. His work created the opening; Cruz Allen provided the finish, steering his effort past Harris with composure beyond his years to make it 3-1 and give Derby clear daylight.

By the final whistle, the story was written: Derby’s youngsters and fringe men had stood up to a seasoned Mansfield side, ridden out their rough spells and answered with moments of real quality.

For a pre-season friendly, it carried a little more weight than usual. Not in points or prizes, but in opportunities seized.
