Daley Blind's Impact at Ajax: A Return to Form
Daley Blind has not eased his way back into life at Ajax. He has grabbed it.
Barely through the door after an emotional return to Amsterdam, the former Manchester United defender has already become a fixed point in the Eredivisie side’s starting XI, reclaiming his old stage with the authority of someone who never really left.
Ajax moved quickly. Sporting director Jordi Cruyff pounced to bring Blind in on a free from Girona before pre-season truly kicked into gear, sensing both opportunity and necessity. The club had lost voices, lost structure, lost a little of its identity over the past year. Blind arrived as more than a familiar face. He arrived as a solution.
Reunited with his former manager Míchel, he slotted straight into the heart of the side. No gentle integration, no slow build-up. From the first sessions, he took command from the back, dictating the tempo with the ball and the tone without it. Team-mates talk; Blind shouts. Constantly. Angles, distances, switches of play – he is coaching in real time, ten yards behind the action.
The effect has been immediate.
Inside the club, there is already a sense that Ajax have pulled off one of the smartest moves of the summer. Outside it, former player Hedwiges Maduro has gone a step further, calling Blind the club’s standout signing of the window and comparing his influence to that of Jordan Henderson.
Maduro sees a dressing room that badly needed a figure like this. A veteran who knows the club, knows the demands, and is not afraid to demand more from those around him.
“You can already see that he is improving players with his coaching and passing,” Maduro told VoetbalPrimeur, pointing to the uplift in key attacking midfielders.
With Blind setting the rhythm from deep, Davy Klaassen and Steven Berghuis are finding better positions, receiving cleaner ball, and playing with greater clarity. The passes arrive earlier, the decisions become simpler, the game looks slower for them.
This is what Ajax have been missing: a conductor.
Maduro believes Blind can step into the kind of leadership role Henderson has embodied elsewhere – the on-pitch extension of the manager, the standard-bearer in the tough moments, the one who drags the tempo up or down with a gesture or a shout. For a club that felt strangely leaderless at times last season, that matters as much as any tackle or assist.
Ajax did not just sign a defender. They brought back a reference point. The question now is how far that renewed authority at the back can carry a team desperate to restore its place at the top of Dutch football.
