Cristian Romero Set for Inter Milan Return in €40m Deal
Inter Milan have moved to the front of the European market with a decisive defensive coup, reaching an agreement in principle with Tottenham for Cristian Romero in a deal worth around €40 million (£34.2m), according to ESPN Argentina.
A World Cup winner, 28 years old and in his prime, Romero is now on the verge of a return to Serie A – the league where he first carved out his reputation as one of the most formidable centre-backs on the continent.
Inter make their move
This is not a speculative enquiry or a slow-burn saga. Talks accelerated once Inter sporting director Piero Ausilio sat down directly with the Tottenham hierarchy. From there, the deal gathered pace.
Tottenham initially pushed for a higher fee. They paid heavily to bring Romero to North London and were determined not to let a cornerstone of their defence leave on the cheap.
