Chelsea's Cole Palmer Withdraws from England Squad Alongside Rashford and Mainoo Despite Tuchel's Warning

Cole Palmer is expected to withdraw from the upcoming England squad due to injury management, dealing a setback to Thomas Tuchel's plans. The Chelsea playmaker, who recently faced pressure from Tuchel to prove his worth following a controversial World Cup omission, appears set to prioritize his long-term fitness over international duty.

Injury and Load Management Leads to Withdrawal

According to The Athletic, Palmer will skip the next England fixtures for load management reasons. He played the full 90 minutes in Chelsea’s 3-0 loss to Brentford but now aims to protect his physical condition by sitting out the international break.

He won’t be alone. Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo are also doubtful for England’s upcoming Nations League games after their recent 1-1 draw with Fulham. Rashford is managing a persistent hip issue since the World Cup and was substituted late in that match. Meanwhile, 21-year-old Mainoo, who was part of the World Cup squad but didn’t get any playing time, is nursing an injury after playing 80 minutes at Craven Cottage.

Tuchel's Challenge to Palmer and Manager Alonso’s Support

Tuchel had urged Palmer to justify his recall, stressing that being selected isn’t enough without delivering on the pitch. Palmer last played for England in March against Japan and missed the World Cup squad entirely.

"It is one thing to be nominated, like with Cole, and getting your ticket back in the squad but it is another thing to perform for England," Tuchel said. "Cole needs to step up when he comes and he needs to show these kind of numbers to get his place, keep his shirt and justify the nomination."

The German coach acknowledged Palmer’s return to form, highlighting four goals and two assists in seven matches as a reason for inclusion. "He has his numbers back, he has his assists back, he has decisive goals back," Tuchel added. "I think he has a point to prove, and the same goes for Trent [Alexander-Arnold]. He was never non-selectable for us, and it is his chance to show, come to camp and be the best version of himself."

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso supported Palmer’s cautious approach. Alonso noted, "I think that sometimes you need to go through a difficult moment with an injury or whatever to learn from that. Cole has gone through a difficult period with the injury, and now he’s working really hard to have the prevention not to have to feel those symptoms."

Struggles With Injuries Shape Decision

Palmer’s choice to sit out stems from a challenging 2025-26 season riddled with thigh and hamstring problems. Although he made 34 appearances, including 24 Premier League starts, and scored 11 goals with three assists, maintaining consistent fitness was tough.

His recent resurgence under Alonso has been encouraging, but skipping England duty signals a focus on longevity. Palmer has two goals in 14 senior England caps and will need more time to secure a regular starting spot under Tuchel.

England Face Tough Nations League Run Without Key Players

With Palmer, Rashford, and Mainoo unavailable, England confront a demanding stretch of four Nations League matches in three weeks. Tuchel’s depleted squad will host Spain, the reigning World Cup champions, at Wembley on September 26. Then they travel to face the Czech Republic in Prague on September 29 and Croatia on October 3.

The international window wraps up with a home game against the Czech Republic at Wembley on October 6. Tuchel will have to rely on other options to navigate this intense schedule and push for positive outcomes.
