Chelsea Target Rafael Leao as Transfer Window Opportunity
Chelsea have been handed a late opening in the transfer window – and it involves one of Serie A’s most reliable attacking forces of the past decade.
Rafael Leao, a standout for Portugal at the World Cup and a long-time pillar at AC Milan, has been offered to the Blues as his future at San Siro edges towards a conclusion. Milan, under pressure to balance their accounts, are now prepared to cash in.
The twist? His price has collapsed.
Once valued among the elite, Leao is now thought to be available for around €40m (£34m), according to reports in Italy. For a 27-year-old winger with his pedigree, that figure will raise eyebrows across Europe, not least in west London.
La Gazzetta dello Sport report that Leao’s representatives have been actively working the phones, testing the market after initial interest from several Premier League clubs went cold. Milan had first tried to engineer a move within Serie A, pushing a switch to Roma, but the Giallorossi have stepped back from the deal. That hesitation opened the door for Leao’s camp to make contact with Chelsea.
This is not the first time the Portugal international has been on English radars.
Arsenal tracked him closely at the start of the window. Mikel Arteta wanted fresh firepower after Leandro Trossard’s departure and Leao fitted the profile: experienced, direct, proven at the highest level. But the Gunners moved in a different direction, landing Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge for £34m. The Greece international has already started to justify that investment in north London, cooling Arsenal’s urgency for another wide forward.
There was a moment when Gabriel Martinelli’s situation left Arteta contemplating a second attacking signing. Arsenal even explored an audacious move for Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior. Once that door shut, the club turned their gaze to defensive reinforcements instead, leaving Leao without the London destination many expected.
Manchester United were also in the frame earlier in the summer. Michael Carrick’s side held what was described as a concrete interest when the market first opened. But last year’s arrivals of Mateus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo have reshaped United’s options out wide. With depth now in place, United have stepped back, joining Arsenal in retreating from the chase.
That leaves Chelsea with a clearer path than anyone might have predicted a month ago.
Leao, for his part, has never disguised his ambition. England has long tempted him. He has spoken openly about the lure of the Premier League and his desire to test himself in what many regard as the most demanding league on the planet.
“I need a new challenge. I already won two trophies in Italy and have been there for a while,” Leao said earlier this summer, underlining a sense that his Milan chapter is nearing its end.
He went further: “The league [Serie A] is evolving, but for my style of football, I think the Premier League or La Liga would make more of my talent, as a player. If a Premier League opportunity were to come along, I would be very happy.”
His words were not idle. On the international stage, Leao has already shown he can live with the game’s highest intensity. He featured in all five of Portugal’s matches at the World Cup under Roberto Martinez, scoring once. The campaign ended in frustration, with the Selecao falling in the last 16 to eventual champions Spain, but Leao’s presence throughout the tournament underlined his status in the national setup.
At 27, he is stepping into what should be his prime. He believes he has squeezed everything he can from his time in Italy. The trophies, the consistency, the status at Milan – all achieved. The question now hangs over Stamford Bridge.
With the fee lowered, the player willing and rival interest cooling, Chelsea have been handed a clean shot at a World Cup-level winger still hungry to prove he can dominate in England.
Do they pull the trigger, or watch a cut-price talent walk into someone else’s dressing room?
