Chelsea Signs Wigan Talent Harrison Bettoni on Four-Year Deal

Chelsea have dipped back into the EFL talent pool, snapping up 18-year-old Harrison Bettoni from Wigan Athletic on a four-year contract.

The midfielder, born in Stockport but used higher up the pitch for much of his breakthrough season, leaves Wigan with training compensation due to the League One club after his deal expired in June. For a player who only truly emerged in 2025-26, the jump is sharp, but very deliberate.

Chelsea’s plan is clear. Bettoni is expected to spend the coming campaign between the academy sides and the outer edge of Xabi Alonso’s first-team squad, learning the demands of a club that now hoards young talent with a purpose rather than a whim. One season to adapt. Then the real test.

He arrives with a small but eye-catching body of work. Bettoni made 27 senior appearances for Wigan last season, scoring four goals in a side that leaned heavily on his energy and direct running. One of those strikes, his debut goal against AFC Wimbledon, was voted Wigan’s goal of the season – a moment that thrust him from prospect to focal point almost overnight.

There were bigger stages too. Bettoni featured against Arsenal in an FA Cup fourth-round tie, a glimpse of Premier League pace and physicality that now becomes his weekly reality.

From League One dressing rooms to the corridors of Cobham, the step is steep. Chelsea believe he can climb it.
