Chelsea Reject Leeds United's Loan Bid for Mykhailo Mudryk
Chelsea have knocked back an opening loan bid from Leeds United for winger Mykhailo Mudryk, but the door to Elland Road is very much still open.
The Championship side tabled a season-long loan proposal that fell well short of Chelsea’s terms, both financially and structurally. Talks have not broken down, though, and negotiations are ongoing as all sides look for a compromise.
Mudryk, 25, has already agreed in principle to leave Stamford Bridge for the season as he looks to rebuild his career and match fitness. The Ukraine international spent 20 months out of the game after a positive test for the banned substance meldonium, a suspension that only ended in July.
Since then, he has been eased back into action on Chelsea’s pre-season tour under new head coach Xabi Alonso, making several appearances from the bench. Those minutes have been about more than sharpness; they have been a shop window for a player who still carries a significant transfer fee and expectation.
Despite a queue of suitors, Mudryk has made it clear he wants to stay in the Premier League. That stance has complicated interest from Strasbourg – Chelsea’s sister club under the BlueCo umbrella – and from clubs in Italy, who had sensed an opportunity to land a high-upside winger on favourable terms.
Leeds have surged to the front of the line for one simple reason: they are prepared to take Mudryk on a straight loan with no option to buy. That condition is crucial for Chelsea, who want his wages covered and his value protected without losing long-term control of his future.
It would be another bold move in a busy summer at Elland Road. The Whites have already brought in attacker Harry Wilson from Fulham, centre-back Tarik Muharemovic from Sassuolo, goalkeeper James Trafford from Manchester City and defender Nico Elvedi from Borussia Monchengladbach. At one stage they also explored a deal for Chelsea striker Liam Delap, but that interest has cooled.
Leeds are not alone in testing Chelsea’s resolve. Brentford have tracked Mudryk for years and tried again to position themselves as a landing spot. The Bees wanted an option to make the move permanent, a condition Chelsea flatly rejected. Their interest is long-standing: Brentford attempted to sign him several months before Chelsea paid an initial £61m to Shakhtar Donetsk in 2023 and they have not completely stepped away from the chase.
Coventry City have also registered their interest, while a switch to Strasbourg remains firmly on the table. Chelsea are weighing up sending other players to the French club as part of their wider squad planning, with midfielder Dario Essugo among those being considered for a move.
For now, the likeliest outcome is that Mudryk leaves on loan. Keeping him at Stamford Bridge is viewed internally as improbable, though not entirely off the table if the right offer fails to materialise.
The next bid, particularly from Leeds, will reveal how much that stance can be tested – and how quickly Mudryk’s stalled Premier League story can start again.
