Chelsea Reject Leeds' Mudryk Loan Bid as Talks Continue
Chelsea have turned down an opening offer from Leeds United to take Mykhailo Mudryk on a season-long loan, but the door is very much still open.
The proposal, which did not include a purchase option, landed well below Chelsea’s expectations on the financial side, prompting a swift rejection. Yet negotiations are ongoing, with all parties aware that Mudryk wants a move that gets him back on the pitch regularly.
The 25-year-old has already agreed in principle to spend the season away from Stamford Bridge as he tries to rebuild his match sharpness. His career was abruptly halted by a 20–month ban after he tested positive for meldonium, and that long spell out has left him playing catch-up at the highest level.
That suspension ended in July. Since then, Mudryk has been eased back into action on Chelsea’s pre-season tour under new head coach Xabi Alonso, making a handful of appearances from the bench as the club carefully manages his return.
Premier League or bust?
In recent talks, Mudryk has made it clear: his priority is to stay in the Premier League. That stance has complicated interest from elsewhere.
Strasbourg, part of the BlueCo ownership network alongside Chelsea, are in the mix and remain a logical destination on paper. There is also interest from Italy. But the Ukrainian winger is pushing to remain in England, where he believes the intensity and exposure give him the best chance of reigniting his career.
That is where Leeds have surged to the front of the queue. The Yorkshire club are prepared to take him on loan without any option to buy, a key condition for Chelsea, who want to keep full control of Mudryk’s long-term future while offloading his wages for the season.
Leeds’ busy summer
Leeds have already been active in the market. Harry Wilson has arrived from Fulham to bolster the attack, Tarik Muharemovic has joined from Sassuolo at centre-back, James Trafford has come in from Manchester City in goal, and Nico Elvedi has been added from Borussia Monchengladbach to strengthen the defence.
They previously explored a move for Chelsea striker Liam Delap, but that interest has cooled. Mudryk is now the headline attacking target, with Leeds sensing an opportunity to land a high-ceiling winger on a low-risk deal.
Brentford and others circle
Leeds are not alone. Brentford remain admirers of Mudryk and were viewed as a serious option. They pushed for a loan with an option to buy, a structure Chelsea have rejected. The London club tried to sign him months before Chelsea eventually landed him from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2023 for an initial £61m and have kept tabs on him since.
Coventry City have also registered their interest, while Strasbourg stay on the table as a strategic choice for Chelsea, who are weighing whether to send other players there too. Midfielder Dario Essugo is among those being considered for a move to the French side.
What happens next?
For now, Chelsea are holding firm on their valuation of a loan and their insistence on no purchase option. Leeds must decide whether to improve their offer or risk losing ground to rival suitors.
One thing seems clear: a season on the fringes at Stamford Bridge is viewed as the least desirable outcome. The prospect of Mudryk staying put is not completely dismissed, but inside the club it is seen as unlikely.
The winger wants a stage. Chelsea want a reset without giving up on a £61m asset. Leeds see a potential game-changer. Someone, very soon, will have to blink.
