Chelsea Targets Pep Chavarria as Alonso Revamps Flanks
Chelsea are on the brink of their next major move of the summer, closing in on a deal for Rayo Vallecano left-back Pep Chavarria in a transfer that underlines Xabi Alonso’s determination to rebuild his defence in his own image.
The London club have already tied up personal terms with the 28-year-old and are finalising a package worth around £16.3m plus add-ons. After weeks of haggling, there is growing confidence on all sides that the agreement will finally be signed off.
It has not been straightforward. Almost a month has passed since Chelsea’s opening £15m bid was rejected at the end of June. As talks dragged on, frustration grew in west London, with a feeling that Rayo were nudging their price up during negotiations and, at one point, pointing towards Chavarria’s full £42.8m release clause.
The stalemate did not last. The defender made his stance clear. Chavarria told Rayo he wanted the move to Stamford Bridge, a decisive push from the player’s side that helped pull the deal back on track for a more realistic fee. Rayo, beaten by Crystal Palace in the Conference League final in May, now look set to lose one of their key performers.

The new Chelsea head coach knows Chavarria well from facing him in La Liga last season while in charge of Real Madrid. The left-back has emerged as a priority target as Alonso looks to replicate the aggressive, high-octane wing-back structure that powered Bayer Leverkusen to the Bundesliga title in 2024.
Right Flank Addressed
Marco Palestra arrived from Atalanta in July for £47m, a statement signing at right-back. Chavarria’s arrival on the opposite side would give Alonso the balance and width he craves, allowing him to unleash a familiar 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 framework in the Premier League.
Practical Needs
Marc Cucurella’s £51.8m move to Real Madrid in June left a gap at left-back. Chavarria offers immediate depth and experience in that role, ensuring Chelsea are not left short in a key position as the season approaches.
This deal also fits a wider pattern. Chelsea’s summer has not been about raw prospects alone; it has been about adding hardened professionals to a young core.

Midfielder Valentin Barco is expected to follow from partner club Strasbourg, adding yet more depth and technical quality.
Chavarria, then, is not an isolated move. He is part of a calculated reconstruction of Chelsea’s spine and structure, built to suit Alonso’s demands on and off the ball.
