Chelsea's Defensive Clear-Out Under Xabi Alonso
Chelsea’s clear-out under Xabi Alonso is starting to bite, and some big defensive pieces are about to fall.
The new head coach has put eleven players up for sale as he reshapes a bloated squad, and three centre-backs now stand on the brink of the exit door. Behind the headline arrivals of Morgan Rogers, Maxence Lacroix, Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck, the real story at Stamford Bridge this summer is the volume of traffic heading the other way.
Chelsea have already banked over £100m by moving on Andrey Santos, Marc Cucurella and Tyrique George. That hasn’t stopped the speculation. Enzo Fernandez, Pedro Neto and Malo Gusto have all been linked with moves, with Neto the latest Chelsea name to land on Manchester City’s shortlist, according to The Athletic.
Inside the club, the message is blunt: only a small core are truly off limits. The Athletic’s report lists Liam Delap, Nicolas Jackson, Marc Guiu, David Datro Fofana and Emmanuel Emegha among those available, while Benoit Badiashile, Axel Disasi and Trevoh Chalobah are expected to go.
Chalobah set to lead defensive exodus
The first domino should be Trevoh Chalobah. A deal with Serie A side Como has finally been agreed, clearing the way for the academy product to end his long association with Chelsea and seek regular football in Italy.
Once Chalobah goes, the line will not end there.
Journalist Nicolo Schira reports that Badiashile is closing in on a move to Napoli, with an agreement in principle already in place. On X, Schira outlined a contract running until 2031 – a season-long loan followed by a four-year deal – worth €2.8m per year for the defender. Negotiations between Napoli and Chelsea are said to be progressing over a loan with an option to buy.
Napoli want a defender they can build around. Chelsea want to trim numbers and wages. The fit is obvious.
On the other side of London, Crystal Palace are moving for Disasi. After his loan spell at West Ham last season, the centre-back has been searching for a permanent home, and Palace look ready to act. Schira claims Palace are closing in on a loan from Chelsea with an option to buy that could become an obligation if certain conditions are met.
If those deals land as expected, Alonso’s defensive unit will look very different by the end of the window.
Mudryk’s return adds a human note
Amid the churn, one story cut through the noise this week: Mykhaylo Mudryk back on the pitch after his doping ban.
The winger featured in Chelsea’s defeat to Juventus, a small but significant step after a long, difficult spell away from competitive action. Alonso admitted the moment carried weight inside the club.
“Yes, for sure, I’m really pleased for him. It was emotional for everyone from the club to see him back, especially when I told him that before the game that was my idea, that he could play 10-15 minutes,” the manager said.
“He was thrilled, for sure. It was, after such a long period, to be back on the pitch, it was a great feeling for him and a great feeling for everyone as well.”
Alonso now has a decision to make on how quickly to reintegrate Mudryk while the rest of his squad is being stripped back and rebuilt around him.
Chelsea have been busy. They are about to get busier. The question is not whether this squad will look different by September – it’s how unrecognisable Alonso wants it to be.
