Celtic Break Transfer Record to Sign Kasper Hogh
Celtic have torn up their transfer ceiling to land Kasper Hogh in a deal that underlines exactly where the club intend to go next.
The Scottish champions have agreed an £11million-plus package with Bodo/Glimt for the prolific Dane, a fee that will eclipse the club-record outlay on Arne Engels two years ago once add-ons are triggered. Hogh is expected in Glasgow for a medical in the coming days and, if all goes to plan, will sign a long-term contract at Parkhead.
This is not a routine summer signing. It is a statement.
Record fee, Champions League pedigree
At 25, Hogh arrives with the numbers to justify the noise. He hit 54 goals and 22 assists in 103 games for Bodo/Glimt, driving the Norwegian side into Europe’s elite and then leaving his mark on it.
Last season he scored six times in the Champions League as Bodo/Glimt reached the last 16. The opposition tells its own story: goals against Sturm Graz, Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan and Sporting Lisbon, plus a ruthless double against Manchester City. He has been scoring on the stage Celtic are desperate to make their own again.
Standing 6ft 1in, Hogh offers a blend of penalty-box instinct and presence that the club have been hunting since before Daizen Maeda’s departure. Now they are paying at a level that matches that ambition.
A £17m front line
Hogh will spearhead a revamped attack that has already cost around £17m. He links up with new £6m arrival Camilo Duran, another forward with Champions League goals on his record after netting five times in last season’s competition for Qarabag.
Celtic have moved quickly after Maeda’s switch to Ipswich Town, a deal that banked an initial £8m with a further £2m in potential add-ons. That exit has not prompted retrenchment. It has triggered a rebuild.
The board have now backed Martin O’Neill with the most expensive signing in the club’s history, arming the manager with a front line designed not just to dominate domestically, but to carry a threat in Europe when the stakes rise.
Business far from finished
The transfer push will not stop with Hogh. Celtic remain in talks with Bundesliga side Paderborn over a £4m move for midfielder Mika Baur as they look to add legs and craft in the middle of the park.
On the flanks, Real Oviedo winger Haissem Hassan is also on the radar, with the recruitment team working against the clock to bolster wide areas before next month’s Champions League play-off.
The pressure of that tie looms over every decision being made at Lennoxtown and in the boardroom. Hogh’s arrival, Duran’s early capture, the pursuit of Baur and Hassan – all of it points to a club that has decided this is not the summer to stand still.
Celtic have paid record money for a striker who scores against Europe’s best. The question now is simple: can this new-look attack carry them there often enough for the investment to look like only the beginning?
