Bruno Guimaraes is heading for Spain – but not, for now, to seal the move many expected.
On Sunday, the story seemed to be writing itself. Reports in England claimed the Brazil midfielder was set for an Arsenal medical on Monday, with an £80million transfer said to be edging towards the finish line. It looked like the moment when one of Newcastle’s modern-day centrepieces would finally be prised away.
By Monday morning, the script had changed.
Sky Sports reported that Guimaraes was actually flying to La Manga to link up with Newcastle’s pre-season camp, not to London to complete a blockbuster switch. The club’s captain, who is understood to have told Newcastle in July that he wants to join Arsenal, boarded a commercial flight from Brazil to Spain on Sunday night, a journey agreed with the club and detailed by The Chronicle.
So instead of medical tests in north London, it will be conversations in the Murcia heat.
Guimaraes is now expected to sit down with new head coach Matthias Jaissle, who is already with the squad in Spain. Jaissle’s appointment as Eddie Howe’s successor has been held up by paperwork, but he is on the training pitches, getting to know a group that may or may not include its most influential midfielder for much longer.
Newcastle, sensing this moment for some time, had begun to brace for life without him. Recruitment plans reflected that reality. The club have been linked with a string of possible replacements for their captain, among them Inter Milan and Croatia midfielder Petar Sucic, as they quietly sketched out scenarios in which Guimaraes does get his move.
For now, though, he is back in black and white, at least on the training ground. His return mirrors that of another Brazil star with Arsenal’s name attached to him.
Vinicius Jr, also a target for the Premier League champions, reported back to Real Madrid duty on Monday despite growing noise around his future. Arsenal are preparing an ambitious push for the forward, who has less than 12 months remaining on his current deal and is locked in a contract stand-off with Madrid.
The timing felt significant. On Saturday in Austria, after Madrid’s 2-2 draw with Fiorentina, Jose Mourinho made it clear: Vinicius Jr would be back at Valdebebas on Monday, alongside Brahim Diaz and new signing Bernardo Silva. The Brazilian kept to that schedule, pictured arriving at the club’s training complex as speculation about Arsenal’s intentions swirled in the background.

Arsenal’s own summer has been controlled rather than chaotic. Preparing to defend their Premier League title, they have added only two new faces so far. Christos Tzolis has arrived from Club Brugge in a £34million deal, offering pace and directness from the wing, while Illan Meslier has joined on a free after leaving Leeds, bolstering the goalkeeping department.
The squad is strong, but the message is clear: the champions want more star power, and they have identified it in Newcastle’s captain and Real Madrid’s No. 7.
For Newcastle, Guimaraes stepping off a plane into La Manga rather than London buys time. Time for Jaissle to make his case. Time for the club to decide whether to hold their nerve or cash in. Time, too, for Arsenal to decide just how far they are willing to go to reshape the heart of their team.
