Bruno Guimarães Set for £75m Move to Arsenal
Bruno Guimarães is poised to walk away from the Spanish sun and into the glare of north London, with a £75m move to Arsenal now on the brink of completion.
The Newcastle midfielder will leave the club’s pre-season training camp in southern Spain to travel to London, where he is scheduled to undergo a medical in the coming days. After weeks of hard bargaining, Arsenal and Newcastle have finally met in the middle on a fee that neither club originally wanted.
Arsenal tried to hold the line at £60m for the Brazil international, wary of paying top dollar for a player who turns 29 in November and has two years left on his deal. Newcastle, emboldened by their balance sheet and Guimarães’s importance, started at a minimum of £80m. The stalemate dragged. Arsenal did not walk away. Newcastle did not blink. The number landed at £75m.
For Newcastle, this is not a sale driven by desperation. Anthony Gordon has already gone to Barcelona, Sandro Tonali to Tottenham, easing any financial pressure and, on paper at least, removing the need to cash in on their captain. They would rather have kept him, the heartbeat of their 2025 League Cup triumph and the player who so often set the tempo of Eddie Howe’s side.
The numbers underline that influence. Since his arrival from Lyon in January 2022, Newcastle have routinely struggled whenever Guimarães has not been on the pitch. Across 153 league appearances he has scored 30 goals and supplied 26 assists, a level of end product that sits on top of his control in midfield. During that period, Howe’s team twice reached the Champions League, with Guimarães at the centre of it all and adored on Tyneside.
His departure will cut deep. Deeper, many on Tyneside will feel, than even Alexander Isak’s move to Liverpool last year. Isak was a star; Guimarães has been a symbol.
Crucially, this is not a case of a club pushing a player out. Guimarães has been intent on joining Arsenal for some time, and that stance did not soften when Howe resigned last week. On Monday he flew to La Manga to meet the incoming head coach, Matthias Jaissle, face to face. It was the new manager’s first real chance to sell his project to the Brazilian.
The meeting did not change the story. Guimarães is understood to have made it clear he wanted to leave and that his mind would not be changed. The conversation remained respectful, and the parting of ways is believed to be cordial – a stark contrast to the bitterness that surrounded Isak’s exit last summer.
Newcastle will at least bank a substantial fee, though not all of it will stay on Tyneside. Lyon inserted a sell-on clause when they agreed to his move in 2022, and now stand to receive around £7m. The French club are entitled to 20% of the profit Newcastle make on Guimarães, and this transfer finally triggers that windfall.
For Arsenal, the move brings in a midfielder who has already proved he can dominate Premier League games and carry a team chasing Champions League places. For Newcastle, it rips out a cornerstone of the Howe era just as a new regime under Jaissle begins.
