Todd Boehly and Mark Walter Consider Selling Chelsea Stakes to Clearlake Capital

Todd Boehly and Mark Walter are reportedly in talks to sell their shares in Chelsea FC to majority owner Clearlake Capital. This move could value the Premier League club at over £5 billion, doubling the price from when the BlueCo consortium took over in 2019.

Background of the Ownership Structure

The BlueCo group bought Chelsea for around £2.5 billion just over four years ago. Currently, Clearlake holds a 61.5% stake, while Boehly, Walter, and Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss share the remaining 38.5%. The possible sale would give Clearlake nearly full control of the club.

Financial Outlay Without Trophies

Since May 2022, Chelsea has spent close to £1.5 billion on player transfers but still has yet to win a Premier League or Champions League title. The club has experienced unstable performances and frequent managerial changes during this period.

Ownership Disputes and Stadium Plans

Reports suggest ongoing discussions over two years about a buyout, amid rumored tensions between Clearlake co-founder Behdad Eghbali and Boehly. One sticking point is disagreement over plans for a new stadium. Fans have also expressed frustration with ticket prices and the BlueCo multi-club ownership model.

Xabi Alonso’s New Era

In the midst of boardroom uncertainty, Xabi Alonso has taken charge of Chelsea’s first team. The summer transfer window saw the club spend over £300 million on new players while earning £143 million from sales. Alonso aims to balance youth with experience, signing Premier League veterans Jordan Henderson (36) and Danny Welbeck (35) to add leadership on the pitch.

Clearlake Set to Gain Full Control

If the deal goes through, Clearlake leaders Eghbali and Jose E. Feliciano will run Chelsea’s operations. A governance clause also means the chairman role will shift from Boehly to a Clearlake representative next May. The hope is that this change brings stability to a club often in turmoil.
