Ben Godfrey Joins Rangers: A New Chapter in His Career
Ben Godfrey’s long road from York City prospect to seasoned Premier League campaigner has taken another sharp turn. The 28-year-old defender has joined Rangers ahead of the 2026/27 season, with the Scottish club holding an option to make the move permanent next summer.
It is a significant capture. Godfrey arrives with senior England caps and more than 100 Premier League appearances behind him, a profile that underlines the scale of the move for both player and club.
His journey began at York City, the hometown club where he first emerged as a composed, athletic presence at the back. Norwich City spotted the potential early and brought him into their academy setup. By the 2018/19 campaign, he had forced his way into the Canaries’ first team and became a mainstay, helping drive their promotion to the English Premier League with a series of commanding performances.
That rise earned him a switch to Everton in the summer of 2020. He made his debut in one of the most intense fixtures English football can offer, a 2-2 Merseyside derby that immediately exposed him to the demands of the elite level. Over the next few seasons he built a solid body of work in the top flight, trusted across multiple defensive roles and regularly tested against some of the best forwards in Europe.
With his Premier League résumé established, Godfrey sought a new challenge abroad. In 2024 he moved to Serie A, joining Atalanta and adding Italian football to an already varied career. The second half of last season took him north to the Danish Superliga, where he spent a loan spell with Brøndby, broadening his experience again and adapting to yet another style of play.
Now comes Ibrox.
On signing for Rangers, Godfrey’s excitement was clear. “I am buzzing, I am really happy to be here. I know the size of the club so it is a massive honour to be wearing the shirt this season, and I can’t wait to get started,” he said, already looking towards the standards expected of him. “I am looking forward to meeting the boys and hopefully helping this club achieve what it deserves, which is silverware and exciting times.”
The message is direct: he has not arrived to ease into Scottish football. He has come to compete for trophies.
Manager Derek McInnes made it equally plain why Rangers have moved for him. “Ben is a player who has competed at a very high level throughout his career. He’s played in the Premier League, been involved with England, and brings a lot of experience with him,” McInnes said, highlighting both pedigree and mentality.
“He’s a strong, athletic defender with good qualities both on and off the ball, and we believe he can add a lot to the squad. We’re pleased to get him in, and I’m looking forward to working with him in the season ahead.”
An England international with Premier League, Serie A and European experience now steps into a dressing room defined by expectation and scrutiny. The deal may be a loan with an option, but the intent is unmistakable: Rangers are arming themselves for a season in which “silverware and exciting times” will not be talked about as ambition, but as obligation.
