Hansi Flick Expresses Surprise as Barcelona Secure Gabriel Jesus for €10 Million from Arsenal
Barcelona's head coach Hansi Flick was taken aback after the club finalized a transfer deal to bring striker Gabriel Jesus from Arsenal for a surprisingly low fee of €10 million. The 29-year-old Brazilian forward arrived in Catalonia on Monday to complete a two-year contract, becoming the sixth new signing for the Blaugrana this summer.
Jesus Joins an Already Strong Attacking Lineup
Jesus witnessed his new teammates dominate Rayo Vallecano with a 5-2 victory at Camp Nou, helping Barcelona maintain a perfect start to their La Liga season with three wins in a row. His arrival aims to add further firepower to a squad already boosted by multiple recent signings.
Flick Reacts to the Transfer Fee
The modest cost of the transfer surprised Flick, who had not anticipated Arsenal letting go of their striker so late in the transfer window. As quoted by ESPN, Flick said,
"I was a little surprised we had the opportunity to get him. I really love him, I like his style to play football, it fits with our style. I think he can help us a lot in the games."
Deco’s Role in Strengthening the Squad
Barcelona's sporting director, Deco, has been busy this summer, bringing in players such as Anthony Gordon, Karim Adeyemi, Rodri, Joao Cancelo, and Dominik Livakovic. Flick praised Deco’s efforts in securing Jesus, saying,
"For us, he can be an important player, so thanks to Deco because again he made an excellent job."
Barcelona had also sought to sign Julian Alvarez to reinforce their attack but were blocked by local rivals Atletico Madrid, who refused to negotiate.
Deadline Day and Future Transfers
The transfer window closes Tuesday evening, leaving limited time for Barcelona to pursue any further major deals, especially for a centre-back. When asked about possible arrivals, Flick remained cautious:
"I don't think so, but we will see."
With Jesus now integrated into the squad, Barcelona prepares to focus on their next La Liga match against Valencia at Mestalla.
