Barcelona Signs Rodri for €76.5 Million in Major Midfield Deal

Barcelona have an agreement in principle to sign Manchester City lynchpin Rodri in a deal worth around €76.5 million, a move that rips one of the game’s most dominant midfielders out of the Etihad and drops him straight into Hansi Flick’s engine room.

The paperwork is now being traded between the clubs. Barring late drama, the Spain captain is expected in Catalonia in the coming days and could even be unveiled before Wednesday’s Joan Gamper Trophy clash against Al Ahly at Spotify Camp Nou.

City rejected two earlier bids from Barça before the Catalans came back over the weekend with a third offer that finally hit the mark. With just one year left on Rodri’s contract in Manchester and the Premier League champions ready to cash in at the right price, the door opened. Real Madrid tried to push through it as well, but once talks accelerated, those close to the deal insist Rodri’s preference was clear: Barcelona.

Cornerstone of a summer rebuild

This is not a one-off splash. It’s the centrepiece of a sweeping rebuild.

Rodri is set to arrive as part of a broader overhaul at Camp Nou. Fullback Joao Cancelo is poised to rejoin as a free agent, with the pair becoming the club’s fourth and fifth signings of a hectic summer after the arrivals of Anthony Gordon, Karim Adeyemi and Jesse Bisiwu.

Frenkie de Jong’s long-term injury forced Barcelona into the market for a midfielder. Rodri was not the first name on the list at the start of the window, but the landscape changed after he lifted the World Cup with Spain and his situation at City softened. Once it became clear a deal was possible, Barça moved aggressively.

The squad surgery is not finished. Barcelona are still hunting a striker, with Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez identified as the main target following the exits of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres, the latter already set for Paris Saint-Germain. As the transfer window twists on, betting markets have started to nudge Barcelona towards the front of the La Liga title odds, reflecting the growing belief that Flick’s side is arming itself for another serious run.

A serial winner heads for Camp Nou

Rodri brings a résumé that fits the scale of the move.

Formed at Villarreal, hardened at Atletico Madrid and then transformed into a world-class metronome at Manchester City, he joined Pep Guardiola’s side in 2019 for €70 million, at the time a club-record fee activated via his release clause. From there he became the heartbeat of a dynasty: four Premier League titles, a Champions League crown, plus FA Cup and EFL Cup triumphs.

The last two seasons have tested him physically. A serious knee injury ruled him out for much of the 2024-25 campaign, followed by a hamstring problem last season. Yet when it mattered this summer, he re-emerged at full power. Rodri drove Spain to World Cup glory, collected the player of the tournament award, and added it to the same honour from the previous European Championship. That Euros success helped propel him to the 2024 Ballon d'Or.

Inside Barcelona, the view is blunt. This is a statement signing. A player signed not just to keep pace with Spain’s elite, but to stretch the gap after back-to-back league titles under Flick.

Now the question hangs over La Liga: with Rodri anchoring Barcelona’s midfield, who can realistically stop them?
