Barcelona to Leave Camp Nou Again Next Season Amid €510m Funding for Roof Installation

Following the approval of a €510 million funding package, Barcelona will temporarily move back to the Montjuic Olympic Stadium next season. This is necessary as major roof installation work begins at Camp Nou, pushing their return to the stadium to January 2028 according to updated redevelopment plans.

Temporary Move Confirmed by Club Treasurer

The club's treasurer, Ferran Olive, confirmed the first team will play home matches at the Olympic Stadium during the intensive construction phase. The plan now expects the Blaugrana’s permanent return to Camp Nou early in 2028.

Board Approves Staggered Financing to Handle Delays

Ongoing construction setbacks have forced Barcelona to secure fresh financial resources to keep the Espai Barca project on schedule. Club members voted over the weekend to approve this new financing, intended to cover costs resulting from delays and ensure progress on the redevelopment.

Funding Breakdown and Project Costs

The additional funding is split into two parts. The first portion of €300 million aims to complete Camp Nou with expanded facilities and new technological upgrades beyond the original scope. The second tranche totals €210 million, raised through two Media Notes issuances of €105 million each; the first issued in July 2026 and the second expected by October or November 2026.

This latest borrowing raises the total estimated cost of the stadium overhaul to nearly €2 billion (£1.7bn/$2.3bn).

Expanded Capacity and Future Highlights

Currently, Camp Nou holds 62,000 spectators. This number will rise to 75,000 this season as the third tier gradually reopens. By January 2028, capacity will reach 95,000, eventually peaking at 105,000 for the 2028-29 season. The renovated stadium will gain immediate global attention as UEFA has chosen it to host the 2029 Champions League final.
