Barcelona's Julián Álvarez Pursuit Hits Wall

Barcelona’s hunt for a new No. 9 has taken a sharp, unwelcome turn. Just as momentum seemed to build around their midfield push for Rodri, the club’s parallel pursuit of Julián Álvarez has, for now, crashed into a brick wall in Madrid.

Atlético stand firm, Barcelona back off

Álvarez, identified as Barcelona’s priority to succeed Robert Lewandowski, had become the focal point of the club’s summer planning in attack. The opening salvo was bold: a €100 million offer placed on Atlético Madrid’s table.

It went nowhere. Los Colchoneros rejected it outright and, crucially, never opened the door even a fraction.

From the start of the window, Atlético’s message has barely changed: the 26-year-old is not for sale. Not at that price. Not at any price they consider reasonable. Not this summer.

Barcelona pushed anyway. They leaned on the player’s own stance, with Álvarez having made it clear he wants to leave. The Catalan club hoped that pressure from the forward might crack Atlético’s resolve as preseason drew closer.

It didn’t.

According to Matteo Moretto on Radio MARCA, Barcelona have now internally written off the deal, describing the operation as “impossible”. That word has weight. It signals a shift from optimism and persistence to reluctant acceptance.

Deco’s trip, Álvarez’s stance – no breakthrough

This wasn’t a half-hearted chase. Sporting director Deco even travelled to Madrid this week to meet with Álvarez’s agent, Fernando Hidalgo, in an attempt to find a way through the deadlock.

The plan was simple: keep the dialogue alive, keep the player engaged, and wait for the moment when Álvarez, back in training next week, could again tell Atlético he wanted out. That renewed push from the player’s side was expected to be a key lever.

Yet Atlético have barely blinked.

The Rojiblancos remain unmoved by the forward’s desire to leave and by Barcelona’s insistence. Their position has been so rigid that, as things stand, it has forced Barcelona to treat the pursuit as a lost cause. Not mathematically dead, perhaps, but strategically shelved.

Market closes in, options thin out

Time in the market rarely stands still, and Barcelona are now feeling that squeeze. With Álvarez slipping away, the club have already watched several backup options drift out of reach.

• Eli Junior Kroupi, another name on the list, has been ruled out for months through injury.
• Fisnik Asllani, meanwhile, is heading to RB Leipzig.

One by one, secondary targets have vanished, tightening the margin for error in a window where Barcelona cannot afford to misfire at centre-forward.

So the recruitment team have been forced to pivot again, scanning a shrinking pool of strikers capable of leading the line at Camp Nou under intense scrutiny and expectation.

Vlahovic waits, Osimhen offered

Among the names still in play, Dusan Vlahovic stands out. Now a free agent after leaving Juventus, the Serbian striker has effectively been on standby, waiting for Barcelona to make a move.

Besiktas are pushing to sign him, but Vlahovic has kept the door open for the Catalans, hoping the call eventually comes. For a club wrestling with financial constraints, a high-level free agent in that position is not a detail to ignore.

Then there is Victor Osimhen. The Nigerian’s profile is different, his price bracket usually higher, his game more explosive. His services have been offered to Barcelona, adding another intriguing but complex option to the mix.

What the club can realistically afford, and how far they are prepared to stretch for a marquee striker, will shape the rest of their summer.

For now, the Julián Álvarez dream belongs to a parallel universe where Atlético Madrid softened and a €100 million bid opened the door. In this one, Barcelona walk away from that chase and into a market that is closing fast, with the identity of their next No. 9 still very much an open question.
