Bacary Sagna Places Kylian Mbappe Among Top Three but Chooses Kvaratskhelia for 2026 Ballon d’Or

Former France international Bacary Sagna told GOAL that Kylian Mbappe ranks only among the top three players globally right now. Despite his outstanding performances, Mbappe is not expected to clinch the Ballon d’Or in 2026, even though he remains one of the most talented footballers.

Harry Kane is also considered a strong contender after an impressive season with Bayern Munich, but Sagna did not include him among his top pick for the Golden Ball either.

Ballon d’Or 2026 Contenders: Kane and Rodri in the Picture

The player who wins a global title in a World Cup year often becomes the leading candidate for the Ballon d’Or. Spain's recent victory in North America puts their stars in focus. Rodri, the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner, along with new Barcelona teammate Lamine Yamal, will be eyeing the award next year.

Kane scored 61 goals for Bundesliga champions Bayern last season, but missing out on the Champions League title might hurt his chances. Meanwhile, Paris Saint-Germain secured back-to-back Champions League titles, which could elevate players like Ousmane Dembele or others from Parc des Princes.

Sagna Backs Kvaratskhelia Over Mbappe and Kane

Speaking with BetVictor Online Casino in partnership with GOAL, Sagna explained his views on who deserves the Ballon d’Or. Asked if Mbappe is the best player currently, he said:

"For me, the best at the minute is in the top three. He had an amazing year and is one of the best. But being a striker means more chances to score, so more attention from people."

He highlighted Khvicha Kvaratskhelia as his choice for the award:

"Kvara has been phenomenal. As a winger, having such an impact and a successful campaign is impressive. Apart from winning the Champions League, I think football players agree Kvara was the most important player last season."

Sagna praised Mbappe’s World Cup performance but questioned his overall impact last season:

"Kylian had an amazing World Cup and I enjoyed seeing him score so many goals. He’s starting this season at his usual high level and is among the top few players. He might be the best in the world, but the question is how impactful were you for your team last season?"

Mbappe’s Quest for Ballon d’Or Glory

Real Madrid has gone two seasons without a major trophy, despite Mbappe winning two La Liga Golden Boots and scoring 90 goals in 106 appearances. Former France forward Louis Saha recently commented on Mbappe’s chances of winning the Ballon d’Or:

"It’s difficult because he wants to win those trophies. Winning the Champions League increases your chances to win the Ballon d’Or. He knows that’s how to get noticed by the best."
"There’s pressure since Madrid hasn’t reached finals despite being favorites. It raises questions on a personal level. It seems like a streak of bad luck he wants to fix quickly."
"It’s always good to see someone succeed when they have potential. He deserves it. Even if people criticize his style, he wants everything. The proof of greats is wanting all. If things don’t work out, criticism follows. Cristiano Ronaldo would have faced similar challenges if he didn’t win those trophies."

Mbappe’s Records and Current Form

At the 2026 World Cup, Mbappe became the tournament’s all-time top scorer. He holds the same record for France and PSG. This season, he already scored a hat-trick against Real Sociedad for Real Madrid. With Jose Mourinho aiming to bring trophies back to the club, Mbappe's impressive form could keep him in the Ballon d’Or conversation.
