Atletico Madrid vs Villarreal: Team News and Predicted Lineups

Kick-off: Sunday, 23rd August, 4pm BST

Venue: Riyadh Air Metropolitano, Madrid

Atletico juggling injuries and a star return

Diego Simeone walks into this one with a familiar dilemma: key absences on the teamsheet, but serious firepower waiting to be unleashed.

The headline is clear. Julián Álvarez is back. The star forward has finished his extended post-tournament break, returned to full training and is ready to lead the line. For a side already buzzing from an opening-day win, that is a major jolt of attacking electricity.

The problems sit just behind him. Alexander Sørloth, Atlético’s premier striker option, is completely ruled out with a persistent muscle injury. Thomas Lemar remains a long-term absentee. New defensive signing Cristian Romero is also sidelined with physical issues, stripping Simeone of an important piece in his back line.

So the system has to carry some of that weight. Simeone is leaning towards a fluid 1-4-1-4-1, built around Koke as the deep-lying anchor in midfield. From there, he wants legs, aggression and clever movement between the lines.

The real fight is on the flanks. Lee Kang-in and Álex Baena both came off the bench and scored in the 2-0 win over Málaga CF on the opening weekend, ripping the game away late and instantly throwing the pecking order into question. Their cameos have piled pressure on Carlos Martín and Arnau Ortiz, who now face a serious battle to keep their starting places.

Simeone has never been afraid to reward impact. Those wing spots feel wide open.

Villarreal arrive close to full strength

Across the technical area, Íñigo Pérez travels to Madrid with something every coach craves in late August: a nearly full-strength squad and a group that already looks robust.

The biggest boost is at the back. Juan Foyth has shaken off a long-term Achilles injury and is not just back in training but already involved in the first league match. His presence instantly stabilises Villarreal’s defence.

Up the pitch, Gerard Moreno is available after brushing off a minor knock, and central midfielder Santi Comesaña is also training without restrictions. Pérez can therefore lean on his established core, instead of scrambling for stopgaps.

Tactically, Villarreal are expected to line up in a classic 1-4-4-2. The plan is simple and familiar: soak up Atlético’s pressure, then break with pace and precision. With wingers like Nicolas Pépé and Alberto Moleiro, they have the tools to punish any loose pass in midfield.

One question lingers in the centre of the pitch. The central pivot spot alongside Pape Gueye is up for grabs. Youngster Carlos Maciá has turned heads in recent sessions, impressing the coaching staff enough to create a genuine contest with the more experienced Comesaña. Pérez must decide whether to trust Maciá’s energy and momentum or lean on Comesaña’s know-how in a hostile away environment.

Form guide

Atletico Madrid

Simeone’s side come in with the wind at their backs. Atlético opened the domestic campaign with a controlled, dominant 2-0 home win over Málaga CF, a result that underlined both their organisation and their depth.

The goals from substitutes Lee Kang-in and Álex Baena highlighted how much quality sits beyond the starting XI. Atlético have carried strong home momentum over from the end of last season and look intent on turning the Riyadh Air Metropolitano into a fortress again. Another clean sheet would send a clear message about their defensive standards.

Villarreal

Villarreal’s start under Íñigo Pérez has been more chaotic, but far from timid. A 2-2 draw away at Racing Santander told the story: two goals down, they fought back to steal a point and showed real resilience and attacking variety.

The flip side is obvious. That comeback was needed because of defensive lapses and structural issues at the back. The Yellow Submarine can hurt teams going forward, but they still carry scars in their own half. Up against Atlético’s intensity in Madrid, those weaknesses will be tested from the first whistle.
