Athletic Bilbao Blocks Barcelona's Aymeric Laporte Transfer

Barcelona have discovered, in no uncertain terms, that prising Aymeric Laporte out of Athletic Bilbao this summer will be anything but straightforward.

Fresh from a World Cup in which Laporte formed a commanding partnership with Barcelona’s own Pau Cubarsí, the centre-back has rocketed up the Catalan club’s wishlist. The pair anchored the Matador’s back line, conceding just a single goal on their way to the title and looking every inch a long-term elite pairing.

That chemistry has not gone unnoticed at the Spotify Camp Nou. According to Sport, Barcelona quickly moved from admiration to intent, exploring the possibility of reuniting Laporte and Cubarsí at club level. The leak of that interest, though, has detonated a powder keg in Bilbao.

Still bruised by the Nico Williams saga, Athletic view Barcelona’s latest move as another raid on their core. The response from the Basque side has been sharp and public: if Laporte is to leave San Mamés, it will only be via the full release clause in his contract, which runs until the summer of 2028.

Early whispers around Spain suggested a relatively modest figure, somewhere between €12 million and €15 million. Those numbers have been dismissed out of hand by sources inside the club. The message from Bilbao is that the true clause is close to double that range, a valuation designed to reflect Laporte’s status and his World Cup showcase.

For Barcelona, the financial equation is only one part of the puzzle. Hansi Flick already has five central defenders at his disposal: Pau Cubarsí, Eric García, Gerard Martín, Ronald Araújo and Andreas Christensen. Any move for Laporte would first require an exit from that group, both to balance the books and to clear space in an already crowded position.

The sporting logic is obvious. Laporte offers experience, left-footed balance and a ready-made understanding with Cubarsí at the highest level. The political reality is harsher. Athletic are in no mood to negotiate, and Barcelona know that, this time, the Basque club hold every card.
