Aston Villa's Defensive Crisis: Replacing Ezri Konsa
Unai Emery is watching the clock.
A summer that was supposed to be about consolidating Aston Villa’s Champions League status has instead turned into a scramble to rebuild a defence that has been ripped apart. The biggest blow? Ezri Konsa, the calm heartbeat of Villa’s backline, is heading to Arsenal.
Konsa has reportedly signed a four-year deal at the Emirates, with an option for a further 12 months. For Villa, it’s not just a transfer. It’s the end of an era. The defender leaves Villa Park after 286 appearances, a mainstay through their rise under Emery, now tempted away by the pull of the reigning Premier League champions.
Villa scramble for answers at the back
The Konsa move is only part of the exodus. Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans, Lucas Digne – all gone. The core of a side that pushed into the Champions League places has been steadily dismantled, and Emery now needs solutions, fast.
According to Sky Sports, Villa have turned their attention to Tosin as a leading candidate to plug the gap. The 28-year-old centre-back, a Manchester City academy product, arrived at Chelsea on a free from Fulham in 2024, but his time at Stamford Bridge has never really caught fire.
He has struggled to nail down a regular starting spot amid the constant churn of managers in west London. The latest hint that he sits on the fringes of Xabi Alonso’s plans came when his squad number was downgraded from 4 to 38, with new signing Valentin Barco taking the more prestigious shirt. Symbolic or not, it felt like a nudge towards the exit.
Then came the clearest signal yet. Tosin was left out of Chelsea’s squad for their final pre-season friendly against Real Sociedad. For a player in his prime, that omission spoke loudly.
Interest has built across Europe. Marseille, Sevilla and Benfica – the latter led by his former Fulham boss Marco Silva – have all been linked. Yet the chance to stay in the Premier League, step into a Champions League project and become a central figure at Villa could tilt the decision. Emery needs a defender who can walk straight into the team. Tosin needs a club willing to trust him with that responsibility.
Arsenal land their man
While Villa search for replacements, Arsenal celebrate a major defensive coup.
Mikel Arteta has been open about his desire to “improve and evolve the squad,” especially at the back, where injuries to William Saliba and Jurrien Timber have exposed a lack of depth. Konsa, at 28 and capable of operating across multiple positions in the back four, fits that brief perfectly.
For Arsenal, this is more than just cover. It’s a statement signing from a domestic rival, a player with Premier League experience and the versatility to slot into Arteta’s intricate system. For Konsa, the move offers a shot at titles and deep European runs. The lure was always going to be hard to resist.
Tomori waits in the wings
Villa, though, are not putting all their hopes on one name.
While Tosin remains a primary target, the recruitment team at Villa Park have also identified Fikayo Tomori as a serious alternative. The AC Milan defender, an England international with Champions League pedigree, is understood to be open to a return to England and is reportedly keen on a switch to Villa Park, preferring the Midlands club over other suitors.
Preliminary talks are already under way. The numbers matter. Villa have already invested heavily this window, bringing in Johan Manzambi, goalkeeper Zion Suzuki and Joao Gomes, and must tread carefully to stay within financial limits.
That’s where Tomori becomes particularly interesting. Milan are said to be seeking a fee in the region of €10–15 million – a relatively modest figure for a player of his profile and experience. If negotiations for Tosin drag or collapse, Tomori offers a cost-effective, high-level solution.
Emery knows the stakes. Lose Konsa without landing the right replacement, and Villa’s defensive structure – the foundation of their surge into Europe – starts to look fragile. Land Tosin or Tomori, and the narrative shifts again: from crisis management to smart retooling for another tilt at the elite.
