Arsenal’s WSL Title Hopes Fade as Early Struggles Mount Despite Summer Signings
Despite high expectations following a strong summer transfer window that brought in England star Georgia Stanway and talented full-back Ona Batlle, Arsenal's Women's Super League campaign has started poorly. Once considered favorites to claim the title, the Gunners now face the possibility of falling behind early in a season that is still young.
Missed Opportunities and Narrow Margins
After opening with a narrow 1-0 victory over Brighton, Arsenal’s momentum stalled. A goalless draw against newly-promoted Crystal Palace saw them create numerous chances but fail to convert, managing an expected goals (xG) figure of 2.56. Former Arsenal goalkeeper Pauline Peyraud-Magnin was instrumental in frustrating her old team.
The pattern repeated in the following match against Manchester United. Despite conceding first due to a rare error from Stanway, Arsenal pushed hard and finally equalized in stoppage time through Smilla Holmberg. The xG of 1.96 showed they generated quality chances but lacked clinical finishing.
Champions League Concerns
The recent 1-0 win over Koge in the Champions League raised fresh doubts. With eight squad changes made by head coach Renee Slegers, Arsenal struggled to create opportunities, posting only one shot on target and a low xG of 1.2. Mariona Caldentey's last-minute penalty rescued the result, but the performance highlighted problems despite the squad depth.
Challenges Against Defensive Teams
Arsenal continue to struggle breaking down teams set up with low defensive blocks, an issue seen in matches against Crystal Palace and Manchester United. Slegers acknowledged the team's tendency to panic during these moments and emphasized simplifying play to improve efficiency in front of goal.
"The most positive thing is that we stayed in it, showed resilience and mentality and got the goal in the end," said Slegers. "I don’t want to over-analyse and over-complicate things. Keep things simple, move forward."
Squad Rotation and Selection Dilemmas
The abundance of attacking options has posed selection challenges for Slegers. Stina Blackstenius led the line in recent games but struggled against low blocks, highlighted by her minimal involvement before being substituted at halftime against Koge. Meanwhile, promising summer signing Geraldine Reuteler has yet to make her debut.
Slegers reflected on managing a large squad: "It’s a luxury problem. We have so many different options and then the challenge becomes how do you choose certain things for certain games, while still keeping the main ideas and consistency within the team?"
Key Upcoming Matches Offer Chance for Redemption
Arsenal face a crucial test against Chelsea on Sunday. A loss would leave them five points behind their London rivals and potentially seven behind league leaders Manchester City, who look strong this season. The Gunners also have a Champions League tie against Paris FC followed by a trip to Man City soon after.
Last season, Arsenal finished four points behind City after dropping seven points early on. They know slow starts can cost dearly in the title race. A victory over Chelsea could restore belief and momentum, silencing critics questioning Slegers’ management and Arsenal’s finishing woes.
There is undeniable talent in the squad, but unless Arsenal arrest this poor form quickly, their hopes of ending a seven-year title drought might slip away once more.
