Arsenal and West Ham Discuss Reiss Nelson Transfer

Reiss Nelson’s Arsenal career is edging towards its crossroads, and West Ham are trying to be first in the queue when the Gunners finally wave him through the exit.

Talks are under way between the two London clubs over a move for the 26-year-old winger, who has spent the last two seasons living life on loan rather than under the Emirates lights. First came Brentford, then Fulham. Now, with another campaign looming, there is still no clear pathway for him under Mikel Arteta.

Arteta has made his position plain: Nelson is not part of his plans for the upcoming season. Arsenal, mindful that he has entered the final year of his contract, are actively looking for a solution that protects both the player’s career and the club’s balance sheet.

West Ham have sensed an opportunity. Preparing for a promotion push in the Championship, they have approached Arsenal to test the water on Nelson’s availability as they look to inject proven top-flight quality into a squad built for a long, unforgiving season.

By all accounts, Arsenal are receptive. Standard Sport understands the club would welcome a move to West Ham and have given encouragement to the Hammers as negotiations continue over the structure of any deal.

One key question remains unanswered: does Nelson actually want to drop into the Championship? That decision sits with the player, and it is not a straightforward call for a 26-year-old still convinced he belongs at the highest level.

Personal terms have not yet been discussed. Nelson is weighing up his options, and he has more than one. Several clubs have made their interest known this summer, including Benfica, now managed by Marco Silva — the coach who brought Nelson to Fulham two seasons ago and knows exactly what he can offer.

Arsenal’s preference is clear. They would like a permanent sale in this window. There have, though, been enquiries about another loan, and the club have protected themselves. If they do sanction a temporary move, they hold an option to extend Nelson’s contract by a further 12 months, preserving his value and keeping control of his future.

Nelson is not the only potential departure. Arsenal are also open to selling Gabriel Jesus and Fabio Vieira before the window closes, a sign of how aggressively they are willing to reshape the squad.

Jesus, once the headline arrival from Manchester City, is now on the market for up to £20million. He has been linked with Napoli, but, as it stands, Arsenal have not received a formal approach from the Serie A champions.

Further down the depth chart, the club are working on a loan move for young goalkeeper Tommy Setford, keen to secure him regular first-team football this season rather than leave him parked on the fringes.

Arsenal’s message is unmistakable: this is a squad in motion. Who seizes the exits, and who dares to step down a division to step up a career, will define more than one season.
