Arsenal Shifts Transfer Focus to Esposito and Konsa After Vinicius Setback

Arsenal’s pursuit of attacking firepower has taken a sharp turn after the door to Vinicius Jr slammed shut in Madrid.

Attention has shifted to Italy, where Inter Milan striker Pio Esposito has become a serious name on the Gunners’ radar.

According to reports, Arsenal sent scouts to watch the 21-year-old in Inter’s pre-season derby against AC Milan, a game used to run the rule over a forward who has been climbing steadily up Arteta’s shortlist. At 6ft 3in, Esposito offers a different profile to what Arsenal already have, even with Viktor Gyokeres and Kai Havertz in the manager’s attacking armoury.

Arteta wants another striker. Not a project, but a player who can stretch defences, occupy centre-backs and live in the penalty area. Esposito has impressed him in recent months, and that interest has now hardened into something more concrete.

Arsenal are not alone. Manchester United are also tracking the Inter man, with the same reports suggesting they are monitoring the situation but are less inclined to rush into a bid. The rivalry between the two clubs could easily spill into the market if Inter show any sign of softening.

Publicly, the Serie A champions have drawn a line. Esposito, they insist, is “untouchable”. Privately, it is understood they have placed a £73m valuation on him, a figure designed to test just how serious the Premier League’s elite really are.

For now, Esposito remains committed to Inter, but those close to the player admit the pull of English football is strong. The Premier League is on his mind. If a formal offer lands, the decision will not be straightforward.

Villa braced for Konsa exit as Arsenal circle

While the search for a striker gathers pace, Arsenal’s defensive plans are also taking shape.

Aston Villa are said to be increasingly resigned to losing Ezri Konsa, with the Midlands club growing more concerned that their defensive lynchpin could be prised away before the window closes.

Arsenal’s interest in Konsa is not new. Arteta first sharpened his focus on the centre-back when William Saliba suffered a back injury at the World Cup, exposing just how fragile his defensive depth could become. That concern has only deepened with ongoing issues for Ben White and Jurrien Timber.

At 28, Konsa offers something Arsenal’s back line lacks: a defender in his prime, with Premier League experience and the composure to anchor a title-chasing side. He has emerged as a primary target, but the first move from north London fell well short of Villa’s demands, coming in at just over half of the £60m asking price.

Villa, according to reports, are now “increasingly concerned” that a second, stronger bid will test their resolve. Inside the dressing room, there is a feeling that change is coming. Morgan Rogers and Youri Tielemans have already gone this summer, and team-mates fear Konsa could be the next to walk away.

Arsenal are not the only club watching. Liverpool, wrestling with a defensive crisis of their own, are also in the frame. Virgil van Dijk is only just returning after the World Cup, Joe Gomez has picked up a pre-season injury, and Jeremy Jacquet has been missing from other friendlies. Andoni Iraola needs reinforcements, and Konsa fits the bill.
