Arsenal Pursue Bruno Guimaraes Amid Newcastle's Firm Rejection

Arsenal have made their first serious move for Bruno Guimaraes – and been firmly rebuffed – but the Premier League champions are not walking away from the chase.

Over the past 24 hours, the London club have accelerated a long-standing interest in the Newcastle United midfielder, opening talks with the player’s camp and then lodging what has been described as an initial offer in the region of £55 million. It was never likely to be enough. Newcastle’s response underlined that.

The answer was no. Emphatic, for now.

Newcastle shut the door on cut‑price deal

Journalist Ben Jacobs revealed on Thursday that Arsenal had made what he called an “exploratory approach” to Guimaraes’ representatives, mirroring contact previously made by Manchester United before the window opened. At that stage, there had been no formal dialogue with Newcastle and, crucially, no willingness from the Tyneside club to entertain a sale.

That stance has since been tested.

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Arsenal went beyond sounding out the player’s side and made a direct approach to Newcastle, only to find the Magpies unmoved by a £55m framework for a deal. The club, Romano says, have “closed the doors” on any sale at that price.

Arsenal’s intention, according to Romano, was clear: explore whether a package around that figure could tempt Newcastle into talks. It did not. Newcastle’s hierarchy see Guimaraes as central to their project and, even in a summer when several players have been linked with exits after missing out on European qualification, they are not prepared to lose their Brazilian playmaker on the cheap.

For now, Guimaraes is leaving the situation in Newcastle’s hands and is understood to be respecting the club’s position. The ball, once again, is at Arsenal’s feet.

Arsenal weigh next move for long-term target

The failed opening gambit does not end the story. Reports in Brazil, notably from GeGlobo, state that Arsenal’s £55m offer has been rejected but that an improved bid is already being prepared. The London club want a new central midfielder this summer and have repeatedly earmarked Guimaraes as a player who fits the technical and tactical demands of Mikel Arteta’s system.

Arsenal’s interest comes at a delicate moment for Newcastle. Several first-team players have been linked with moves away from St James’ Park as the club balance sporting ambition with financial realities after missing out on Europe. Guimaraes sits at the top of that list of in-demand stars, but Newcastle’s response to Arsenal’s opening offer suggests they intend to dictate the terms – or keep him altogether.

Arsenal now face a familiar transfer-window question: push harder for a marquee midfield signing or pivot to alternative targets. For Guimaraes, at least, they look prepared to test Newcastle’s resolve again.

Jeremy Monga pursuit gathers pace

While the Guimaraes saga simmers, Arsenal are moving more decisively on another front.

Leicester City youngster Jeremy Monga has emerged as a key target, and Arsenal have already seen an initial “cheeky” bid turned down. The opening offer was always likely to be a starting point rather than a knockout blow, but the intent is obvious: Arsenal want to bring the highly rated talent to north London before the situation heads to a tribunal.

According to Football Insider, discussions between Arsenal and Leicester are ongoing as both clubs work to agree a fee. There is optimism in north London. The report claims Arsenal are “confident of finalising a deal” for Monga this summer, with the player himself understood to be willing to make the move to the Premier League champions.

That willingness matters. With the youngster keen and both clubs talking, Arsenal sense an opportunity to secure one of the domestic game’s more intriguing prospects without the uncertainty and delay that a tribunal process would bring.

A window that could reshape Arsenal’s midfield

Arsenal’s summer plan is taking shape: a high-end operator like Bruno Guimaraes to anchor and elevate the midfield now, and a rising talent like Jeremy Monga to grow into the role in the years ahead.

Newcastle have made their position clear on Guimaraes at £55m. Leicester have already rejected Arsenal’s first attempt for Monga. The champions, though, are rarely one-and-done in the market under Arteta and Edu.

The next bids will tell everyone how badly they want to redraw the heart of their squad.
