Cristhian Mosquera is set for another look at centre-back, a chance to show he can be trusted to cover for Saliba in the months ahead rather than merely make up numbers. Max Dowman and Ethan Nwaneri will both be watching the teamsheet closely, hoping Arteta again proves willing to lean into youth when the schedule allows.
The headline intrigue, though, circles around Kai Havertz. The forward has ground to make up on the fitness front after his summer exertions, yet he was working individually at Bayer Leverkusen’s facilities last week and looks sharp enough to come straight into the side against Girona. If Arteta wants an early look at how he knits into the attacking patterns, this is the moment.
There is movement elsewhere in the squad. Gabriel and Gabriel Martinelli are due to link up with the group ahead of the game, but with only limited training under their belts, any involvement is likely to be brief. Their roles today, if they feature at all, will be about rhythm rather than risk.
One return will draw particular attention. Ben White is closing in on his first minutes since the knee injury that cut short his season.
