Brought in to fill the void left by Leandro Trossard’s move to Besiktas last week, Tzolis arrives not as a project for tomorrow but as a weapon for right now. Arsenal see him primarily as a left winger, yet his versatility across the front line gives Mikel Arteta another flexible piece in an attack built on movement and rotation.

What truly grabbed Arsenal’s attention was his end product. Twenty-two goals and 29 assists in Belgium last season is not a hot streak; it is a body of work. Tzolis carried a constant threat in the final third for Brugge, and he signed off from the Belgian side with the sort of moment that tends to stick in a scout’s mind: cutting in from the left and bending a superb finish into the top corner in a friendly against Feyenoord. While much of Arsenal’s squad are still shaking off the summer, Tzolis is already deep into his rhythm. Greece did not qualify for the World Cup, so his off-season was short: just under four weeks. The move did happen, and his workload barely dipped. Tzolis reported back early to Brugge, taking part in two weeks of pre-season there. He returned to training in early July and logged 45 minutes in that Feyenoord friendly, sharpening his match fitness while many of his future team-mates were still away.

Now he has stepped straight into life at London Colney. Arsenal officially began their pre-season at the Sobha Reality Training Centre this week, and Tzolis has already been out on the grass with his new team-mates, slotting into sessions rather than easing his way in. The contrast is stark. A chunk of the squad remain on holiday after World Cup duty; others only rejoined full training in recent days. There was a mini-camp in Marbella last week, but the intensity could not match the workload Tzolis had already banked with Brugge.

All of that gives him a clear edge. At this stage of pre-season, when legs are heavy and touches are loose, there is every chance the new signing is sharper and fitter than much of the Arsenal dressing room. For a winger who relies on acceleration, timing and clean execution in the final third, that matters.

Upcoming Fixture

Arsenal’s first test comes next weekend against Girona in Spain. Tzolis is expected to travel with the squad and is in line to make his first appearance for the club there. A new league, a new shirt, the same direct, goal-hungry winger cutting in from the left.

He has done the hard yards already. Now comes the stage to show exactly why Arsenal moved so quickly to make him Trossard’s successor.
