Arsenal Cautioned on £150m Pedro Neto Move by Aliadiere
Jeremie Aliadiere has urged Arsenal to resist the temptation of a blockbuster move for Pedro Neto, warning that the club cannot ignore the financial reality behind their recent spending spree.
The former Gunners forward, speaking to Metro via Football Betting, praised Neto’s profile but questioned whether a nine-figure outlay on another winger fits a squad that has already been heavily invested in.
“I just think: Yes, we’re champions, yes, we’ve made a lot of money. But at some point, you’ve got to balance the books as well,” Aliadiere said, pointing to the scale of Arsenal’s transfer business over the past two windows.
Arsenal have already committed major funds since Bruno Guimaraes’ arrival and, as Aliadiere highlighted, have recouped a fee for only one significant departure in Leandro Trossard. That equation, he suggested, has to matter.
“When you think about the money that Arsenal already spent after Guimaraes’ arrival, what we’ve spent last year, plus we’ve only had Trossard leaving for money,” he said. “Only the club will know financially where they are, but will they be able to go and spend 150 million on a new winger, or is it maybe financially more reasonable to go for a lower option?”
Neto, now at Chelsea after his move from Wolves in August 2024, has struck 19 goals in 103 appearances and built a reputation as one of the Premier League’s most dangerous wide forwards when fit. That pedigree has inevitably attracted attention, with Enzo Maresca’s City among the clubs monitoring his situation.
Aliadiere understands the appeal. He also sees the risk.
“Pedro Neto could be a great option. He’s played in the Premier League for many years, is established, knows the league, a very, very good player,” he said. “And don’t forget, we’ve already signed a left winger with Christos Tzolis. He’s a left winger, so you’re just adding top talent.
“We’ve spent 40 million. You can’t just spend 40 million and then just stick him on the bench and never play him. So I think you’ve got to keep every option open and see what is best financially for the club.”
That point cuts to the heart of Arsenal’s dilemma: stockpile talent and risk congestion, or trust the players already brought in at significant cost. With Tzolis arriving as a left-sided option and the squad already stacked in attacking areas, a £150m swoop for another winger would be a statement – but not necessarily a sensible one.
Across London, Chelsea face a very different kind of balancing act.
Neto may be admired elsewhere, yet Chelsea are not actively pushing him towards the exit. The issue is the size of the squad around him. A senior group of 41 players has left head coach Xabi Alonso openly conceding that the club must trim numbers to restore structure and clarity.
Addressing the swirl of speculation around potential departures, Alonso chose his words carefully but did not hide from the scale of the task.
“I’m sure that from today to the last day of the transfer window there will be a lot of links, a lot of rumours, so to be commenting on all of them, it’s going to be a hard task,” he said. “But for sure, we need proper balance in terms of qualities, in terms of positions, in terms of balance. We want to have a complete squad and we want to make a good team.”
The message from both sides of the capital lands in roughly the same place. Arsenal are being urged to think twice before throwing £150m at a luxury signing. Chelsea, weighed down by numbers, are being forced to think hard about who they can afford to lose.
If Neto becomes the hinge between those two strategies, his next move will say plenty about where the modern super-club draws the line between ambition and restraint.
