Arsenal Closing in on Bruno Guimaraes Transfer
Arsenal’s pursuit of Bruno Guimaraes is moving out of the rumour mill and into decision time.
The London club have been in direct contact with Newcastle United over a deal for the Brazilian midfielder, and the shape of any agreement is now being thrashed out. The fee? That’s no longer a mystery either.
Arsenal close in on top midfield target
Arsenal have identified Guimaraes as their priority midfield signing this summer and, in the past few days, have stepped up their efforts to land him. The club want the deal wrapped up quickly. So does the player.
Sources indicate Guimaraes has told his representatives he wants his future resolved before he reports back for pre-season on Friday. That self-imposed deadline has injected urgency into talks between the two clubs.
Newcastle’s public stance remains firm: they do not want to sell. Yet behind that line, discussions are active. Transfer correspondent Fraser Fletcher reported on July 28 that talks are ongoing over the structure of a potential agreement, a sign that Newcastle are at least prepared to listen.
The £85m question
Transfer journalist Ben Jacobs has now put a number on it. Speaking on talkSPORT, he claimed Newcastle are willing to sell Guimaraes to Arsenal for around £85million.
Arsenal believe anything north of £75m could bring Newcastle to the table. From Tyneside, the message is that the valuation sits closer to £85m. That gap is where the current negotiations live.
Jacobs also underlined Arsenal’s growing belief that a deal can be done, even as Newcastle insist no formal bid has yet been lodged. Arsenal have used this route before: securing a verbal understanding before submitting an official offer, as with Christos Tzolis.
Inside Newcastle, there is no cast-iron guarantee that Guimaraes will stay. Eddie Howe has refused to offer one. The expectation is that the midfielder will report back for pre-season on Friday and, unlike Alexander Isak at one stage, he is not expected to push for a move or down tools. Any departure would be negotiated, not forced.
Newcastle are also understood to be exploring potential replacements, a key factor that could influence whether they ultimately cash in.
Decision time approaching
Both clubs want clarity, and quickly. Arsenal cannot afford to linger on one target deep into August. If Guimaraes proves unattainable at the price Newcastle demand, they will have to pivot to alternatives.
Newcastle, for their part, do not want the new season overshadowed by constant questions about their midfield lynchpin’s future. Howe wants certainty before the campaign begins, not a saga that rumbles on past the opening fixtures.
With optimism rising at Arsenal and Newcastle’s valuation now broadly defined, the next few days should tell the story. By Friday, or shortly after, we will know whether Guimaraes is staying to anchor Newcastle’s project — or stepping into the heart of Mikel Arteta’s evolving Arsenal side.
